Why are you using consumer-grade HDDs in your server, especially after you almost lost all your data at the office

It's a personal/gaming PC, it's just in a server case. Unless you're referring to a different build than the one in the video...

And did you watch the data recovery vlog? The drives weren't the issue, the RAID card was...

I was referring to Linus' home server that is shows at ~4:45. I was objecting to the use of consumer-drives. I had at least expected WD Red drives (or equivalent)

And yes I did watch the recovery vlog.

Really?  You're questioning the drive choices of a guy who ran 8 refurbished SSDs in RAID 0? :P  This seems like a major upgrade xD

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

It's his server so he can do whatever. I just said that I don't think WD Blacks are the right solution here.

And yes, it is an upgrade compared to refurbed SSDs in raid 0

Gotcha.

I mean, it's a home server. It's not like it's being put through the use that our work ones are. I'm not saying you're wrong to object, I'm just saying that it's probably not the end of the world.

well, clearly, yes :)

There's plenty of bandwidth, if that's what you're wondering.  Once you're able to send display data like displayport, hdmi, etc. adding on sound, mouse, etc. are pretty insignificant actually.

I've been trying to find the sketchup file of the design shown in Part 2, did you upload it onto 3D Warehouse? If so, what is it called?

what a good idea love the thunderbolt hub io solution, this is why i watch this channel everyday it may not be the most in-depth, it may be a little hit and hope but the solutions to problems like this are not what anyone else does, 5-10k worth of gear to remove the low noise that a ok system produces

i'm not joking, this is the reason I watch, its the most entertaining tech channel on you tube

I read the other day someone say LTT is the top gear of tech channels; I agree with them

all i/o in to a thunderbolt hub ( https://www.elgato.com/en/thunderbolt/thunderbolt-2-dock ) sent along thunderbolt optical cable (optical needed for distance as it holds clean signal much longer) then in to the back of the rig

its a very elegant solution

I have a question: How much money, in total did you spend on all this stuff, including PCs, UPSs, NAS, Peripherals, and so on? And if it was sponsored, how much would it cost to do yourself?

one question:

I see that you have a graphics card in there. when you pass the video through the ThunderBolt, which gpu is being used?

Thanks!
