Buying a GTX 980 Ti, but I have FX 6100

Hi guys. I have just turned 18 and I wanted to upgrade my PC and my main objective would be to get a huge GPU upgrade to last for a long time, but at the moment I dont have enough money for a CPU as well, only at Easter or the Summer. Should I get the 980 Ti and overclock the CPU or get a GTX 970 and a better CPU? Any sugestions would be very apreciated

My Build:

FX 6100 OC (3.7 Ghz)

Gigabyte GA-990FX-Gaming Motherboard
16GB (2x8GB) Corsair DDR3 Vengeance Pro Series Red
750W Corsair RM750x Series
Samsung 850 Evo 250 GB
Western Digital 1TB Green
AMD Radeon HD 6670 2GB Super OC'd xD

Yeah, grab a i5 and a 390 instead. Massive bottleneck.

get the 980ti now and overclock your cpu

upgrade later when you can

or alternativle you could get R9 380 and spend the rest of the Money on hookers, since you're 18 now

Your entire platform has to change if you want to give that 980 Ti its full potential. I don't think there's any AMD chip that won't bottleneck a 980 Ti right now.

I'd save up until you can get a mid range i5, a Zxx(x) board, and a 970.

But I really wanted the 980 Ti, because I wanted something to last for a long time, I don't really care if it bottlenecks but I wanted to make the most out of the CPU I have until I get some more money for a proper CPU.

Get the 980 Ti, a bottleneck doesn't kill anyone, upgrade your CPU later on.

Early 2020 Build : Intel i7 8700k // MSI Krait Z370 // Corsair LPX 8x2 16GB // Aorus 5700 XT // NZXT H500

Early 2019 Build : Ryzen 2600X // Asus Tuff X470 // G.Skill Trident Z RGB 8x2 16GB // MSI RTX 2070 // NZXT H500

Late 2017 Build : Intel i7 8700k // Asus Prime Z370-A // G.Skill Trident Z 8x2 16GB // EVGA GTX 1080 Ti  // NZXT S320 Elite

Late 2015 Build : Intel i7 6700k // Asus Maximus VI Gene Z170 //  Corsair LPX 8x2 16GB // Gigabyte GTX 970 // Corsair Air 240

don't listen to those fools, do as your heart tells you to do

go with the huge GPU, it's not like it will kill or anything, you will be able to upgrade your CPU anytime you want in the future

CPU: Intel i7 5820K @ 4.20 GHz | MotherboardMSI X99S SLI PLUS | RAM: Corsair LPX 16GB DDR4 @ 2666MHz | GPU: Sapphire R9 Fury (x2 CrossFire)

Then you're gonna have to live with something that performs close to a R9 270/X until you upgrade.

Wait for Pascal or Polaris, according to the current rumour mill they are both approaching and will likely last you a lot longer. By then you can also have saved up for Z170.

Hate to break it to you, but girlfriends aren't magically immune to those either.

So like a 270X?

The FX will bottleneck the performance of the 980Ti. You can't deny that.

If I say it depends on the game you want to play

I'd like to see you play at 1440p or 4k with a 270

the question stand, will that game perform like it's on R7 270 if you run it on 980ti with overclocked FX6100?

Yes?

Tomb Raider (as mentioned previously) is not CPU heavy at all. That doesn't prove anything.

Yush, getting a CPU and lower end GPU is boring anyway.

He has money by the time it's summer, too, so even if it bottlenecks, it won't be for that long.

Alternatively, save more money and get all awesome parts at once in summer.

Tomb Raider (as mentioned previously) is not CPU heavy at all.

so you're telling me that Tomb Raider is not CPU heavy at all but if you install it on a PC with 980ti and overclocked FX6100 and play it - it the Tomb Raider game will run as if it was being played on a PC with R7 270

additionally you have Graves smoking cigar in your avatar

so I ask you - WHAT YOU SMOKE DUDE???

Tomb Raider being more gpu dependent isn´t a rumor... Look at any game that´s cpu and gpu intensive. You´ll see much bigger diffrences.

Not the clearest benchmark, but the 6300´s framerate remains significantly lower than the 3570k´s and the 6700k´s.

I'm probably gonna get a good air cooler, like the Hyper 212 Evo, or a average water cooler, like the Seidon 120v. I could get a proper 4.2 Ghz / 4.5 Ghz out of it
