Which graphics card?

So I'm building a computer and I need to know if a Asus strix R9 390 8gb($519 AUD) or a Asus strix GTX 970 4gb ($509 AUD) would be better. I know absolutely NOTHING about AMD so can someone point out the obvious.

The 390 has double the VRAM and performs a bit better in most games. At higher resolutions like 1440p the 390 is the clear winner.
