Custom built NAS VS prebuilt NAS

dchurchw

If you build one yourself you can build it to your needs, upgrade it in the future and expand if you need more storage. It can also be more reliable that some of those prebuilt nas that only come with one drive. I think custom is better

a prebuilt nas is an amazing plug&play experience.

a self built nas is configuration pr0n.

depends what you're into: plug&play, or a whole bunch of fun before you actually get started.

around $200 give or take. It needs to be able to run as a NAS almost always 24/7. I have some CPU Coolers to spare so thats not a problem although I would prefer a low power CPU

better hope thats without drives.

but at that price point you may be better off getting a prebuilt nas.

prebuilt for sure at that price.. you WILL NOT build a good nas for that much.

For $200 go grab a Synology NAS, throw a drive in it, and call it a day. My DS110j has been running strong for 5+ years without an issue and I use it as a backup for my DS115j.
