 January 15 is known to Wikipedians as Wikipedia day. Before 2001, an encyclopedia could cost thousands of dollars, trees, water and ink, and let’s face it, was really really hard to carry around. Today we can reach millions of referenced articles, photos, illustrations, sources, and word definitions from anywhere we can reach the internet. And the volunteers who have been creating this amazing work for 15 years don’t charge anything for it. They want to share all knowledge with every person. Many of us have this opportunity right in our pockets.

 

 This year we’re celebrating 15 years of free and open knowledge—learning, discovery, and joy for people on every continent.

 

Wikipedia, the savior of the average high school and college student has hit a new milestone in it's time online. As a Sophomore, I use Wikipedia on a fairly regular basis as a "research starter" like millions of other students.

you have to be older than wikipedia to use it. Their new policy.

A month. My birthday is on the 31st. I'm older than Wikipedia by about 11 months and 15 days.

Even though the academic world largely shuns Wikipedia as a primary information source, one must admit it is an amazing starting point for both professional and leisure use. I use Wikipedia for quick information lookups (movie release dates, movie cast, video game details, etc), or sometimes I dive into some astrophysics section or another and just read and go on a Wikipedia Adventure for hours. I'm not a physicist, so I don't have the base to use more advanced sources in the latter example.

 

If you're planning some kind of review or essay of a topic that has several major subtopics, I've always found Wikipedia useful for, at the very least, making those multiple subtopics known to me so I can research them with better refinement.

I use Wikipedia as a place to find sources. It's a great starting point. I would never cite Wikipedia, however. We're not allowed to.
