2 in 1 for university

So I'm in need of a new laptop for uni, and I've been looking at small 2 in 1s primarily.

I'd preferably like to get it from either currys PC world or from John Lewis but if there's a very competitive one elsewhere I'll consider it.

The budget is between £500-600, preferably closer to the £500 mark.

What I'm considering at the minute is the Lenovo Yoga 700 http://www.johnlewis.com/lenovo-yoga-700-convertible-laptop-intel-m3-8gb-ram-128gb-ssd-11-touch-screen/p2267197?colour=Orange

and the Microsoft surface 3 with a type cover http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/microsoft-surface-3-128-gb-black-type-cover-bundle-10138950-pdt.html

There's also the lenovo U31 which is an option, although it's not a 2 in 1 which is preferable. http://www.johnlewis.com/lenovo-u31-laptop-intel-core-i7-8gb-ram-128gb-13-3-/p2295701?colour=White

Also, a minimum of 4gb of ram and an SSD is the criteria, as it'll be taking some knocks and I'll be using it for some more basic programming and using note taking software.

Any reason for 2 in 1?

For that price you can pic up a alot better Laptop for the same-ish price,
If portability is a concern, chromebook do quite well.

Can't use a chromebook, the software I need to run won't work on it.

Mainly I want a 2 in 1 because I've a decent desktop so don't need an ultra powerful laptop, plus I want a smaller laptop, 13" is the largest I'm willing to go really and many of them are 2 in 1s.

While I not familiar with the Currys or John Lewis, I was still going to recommend the Lenovo Yoga (any of them in general but I guess the hits all your spec reqs.)

isn't the 700 is 14 inches?  edit: NVM, was looking at a different Lenovo....

Is the yoga series a lot better than the surface? I've used a surface 3 and a surface pro 4 before but never had a go with a yoga 700, or any yoga besides their android tablet for that matter.

Well my last direct Yoga experience was a few years back when Ultrabooks were $1000+ starting. It was a solid build and preformed like a champ. But I do have recent hands on with Surfaces and have never really been a fan. Even tho the internals are more computer than tablet, the build leans too much on the tablet side.

If you don't mind the kickstand and keyboard on the surface just do I side by side comparison of the two. I'm personally not of fan of the Surface's build.
