Swap to 6700k or stick with i7 5960X

Hi guys,

So i'm considering changing over to a 6700k as I no longer use my PC for rendering as much as I use to and mostly use it for games now so i'm considering getting a 6700k, however i'm not sure if it's worth it and not sure if I will get good value back on my 5960X now as computer components lose value pretty quickly. What do you guys think worth the swap for what looks on graphs like quite an improvement for most games especially simulators like city skylines that doesn't appear to like 8 core processors.

Also my CPU block broke and so now I am considering going air cooled due to less hassle the only issue I have is with the 5960X this isn't as easy to do due to it getting quite hot at any decent clock speed and pretty much can only do stock when air-cooled and stay within reasonable temps.

Custom PC:

Intel Core i7 5960X GTX1080 Strix | 64gb 2400mhz DDR4 Corsair Vengeance Ram | Samsung S951 256gb M.2 | 4TB WD Blue SSHD | EVGA Supernova G2 1300watt PSU | Acer XB270HU | Corsair K95 RGB | Corsair M65 RGB |

You could just drop it down to a 5820k and overclock the hell out of it.  That would save you a lot of time and money.

No an I7 is still better than any AMD cpu for rendering and any way.

as I no longer use my PC for rendering

An AMD cpu has no place in a solely gaming build, end of.

Are you kidding AMD needs to release something new for me to even consider them, I'm using an AMD rig at the moment whilst my PC is unusable due to not having a cooler and it severely bottlenecks my Titan X and that's one of AMD's strongest processors one of the FX 8-cores

lolwut? Are you serious?

A 5960X would fucking deck an FX-8350, just absolutely annihilate it.

Have you considered an i7-5820K instead? The extra cores might come in handy, and seeing as you've already got an X99 motherboard, I'd say that's the best way to go. You should be able to sell your 5960X for a fair amount.

This is the most senseless, least helpful post i have seen on this forum thus far. You clearly did not read the post, or you would have known his current CPU is more than powerful enough for rendering. He even said, and i quote

So i'm considering changing over to a 6700k as I no longer use my PC for rendering as much as i use to

As for OP: I personally would just stick with X99 since you already have it. You might be able to sell your chip and get a decent amount of cash back, but 6700k's are still too expensive at the moment for me to recommend. If they drop down, or you have a microcenter nearby to get them for $330 on sale, then maybe they would be worth it. Until then, X99 is the better deal.

No...... just no.

I could do that. I am considering changing my motherboard anyway though because mine is slightly wider than standard ATX and limits which cases I use I wanted to use the Fractal Define S but it wont fit due to the indented motherboard tray.

The Titan X is good but I still feel cheated by Nvidia when the 980ti is pretty much the same and doesn't coil whine as much on the non reference designs.

Then I guess Skylake would be fine.

Just overclock the nuts off the 5960x. Not sure if you got a decent chip, but you should be able to at least get 4.4.
