Typing demo of the Lite-on. These are some of the earliest white Alps I know of (rather, these Lite-on branded Silitek keyboards have these super early white Alps). They even have gold springs (usually). They're basically late blue Alps with white sliders, so even with a shit mic, they sound great 👌

I know the big thing with keyboards is 60-75% layouts, but I'm looking for a good hotswap keyboard in an 1800 or fullsize layout, which seems to be an absolute unicorn. There are a couple well-known ones out there, and a few lesser known - one of which I actually recently got. However, the one I got (the Hexgears Impulse) has LEDs on the PCB which interfere with non-kailh housing switches, causing them to sit at a bit of an angle and be quite loose, if they fit into the socket at all. This has been a huge buzzkill, as some of the switches I'm most interested in don't have the bigass hole on the north side to make room for these LEDs.

So, I know the top two options are Drop Shift and the GMMK fullsize, but I don't know if

  1. They don't also have the same problem with LEDs that the Impulse does
  2. They're worth the trouble and cost of getting another keyboard.

The Shift is going to take months to arrive out of preorders, and while the GMMK is affordable, I've heard some pretty conflicting things about build quality, and their marketing is incredibly obnoxious. Actually, I've heard bad things about the build quality for both.

So, is there something out there that is:

  1. Full size/1800
  2. Hotswap
  3. Worth the price
  4. Not in group buy hell, or if it is, at least in an active or upcoming one.

I fully expect the answer's going to be, 'just get a Shift dumbass', but I'm really holding out hope that people still exist who need numpads.

Otherwise I might lose all hope and just get one of those Moonlanders and a side numpad or something and see if I can survive the transition, and also the destruction of my wallet.

Yeah like you said, pretty much your only option is a fullsize GMMK.

Welcome to the forum!

Trust me I went through this extensively a few months back. The best option would be the GMMK Fullsize, and its actually is a solid keyboard. Good build quality with a healthy amount of switch options that won't break the bank.

The alternative is a PCB that you solder hot swap sockets onto the PCB, and if you want you could even get assembly service done so that you would not have to do it yourself.

KpRepublic has some options that could work, the also offer assembly, customer service is meh if you have a slightly involved question, but if you got the following it would be straight forward.

PCBHot Swap Socket - Case+PlateStabilizer

From here you would just need the switches, keycaps, cable, and optionally RGB LED strip for under-glow.

When I went through this process I started a spreadsheet to help me keep track.

Thanks so much for the quick replies!

The very thorough reply and spreadsheet here is huge Procrastinator, thanks very much for these resources - incredibly helpful work. A custom keyboard in my future is looking more and more likely, and this will go miles to making life easier for me, and I'm sure for plenty of others.

No problem! Glad it helps haha, and all of this info should be relevant as of right now, list was made about 8-6 weeks ago.

In red text I highlighted some of the 'negatives' of each option for newcomers to custom mechanical keyboards. I just got into this bottomless pit of a hobby myself, dived head first haha. But I may even just expand on this list to include more options within given keyboards sizes/layouts.

As of now I am still waiting for my order from KpRepublic to arrive, and a few group buys elsewhere. Another great option to order from is KBDFans but they are a pretty popular site so stuff is often hard to find in stock. I got two DIY kits from them and am hugely impressed so far, the overall shopping/ordering/info providing experience with them is a lot better but there is a price premium. They do offer cheaper options with plastic cases vs anodized aluminum, but again stock is an issue, and they don't have a hot swap option in a 90% or full size layout. But they too offer assembly so if you are set on a switch type you could have them solder them in, hot swap is nice though.

Do you have a switch preference? Tactile, Linear, Clicky?

This is a great vid if you have not already seen it.

My first dive into different switches was with the GMMK Fullsize, being a long-time Cherry MX Brown user I decided to change things up and went with Gateron Black (first linear switch I really liked, heavy weight makes up for the lack of a tactile bump), Kailh Purples (just started trying these out), and their sample pack.

Otherwise if you are sourcing parts yourself here are a few recommendations.

- Go for 5-pin switches, especially for a hot swap socket this provides more stability. I would say it is noticeable over a 3-pin switch IMO.

- Screw in stabilizers are basically a must IMO. GMK and Cherry offer good options from basically every retailer and the price premium is neglible may $5-10 more over basic PCB mount stabs.

- Lube your stabilizers, switch lubing is not really a requirement, and it takes a lot of time. Plus any keyboard you have used in the past has never had lubed switches. But stab lubing makes a big difference, it is easy as there are few parts to lube, and smoothness + noise level changes a lot. You can look up guides on YouTube, even just dielectric grease works.

Good luck!

I'm looking for my first mechanical keyboard I would preferably like it to be 75% (UK layout) it will mainly be used for typing and the occasional gaming I don't want to spend to much on it at most £50 any recommendations would be appreciated.

I sort of have a switch preference - I like tactiles quite a lot, and I actually have some Kiwis on the way right now. This all got started when the T1 switch samples I got wouldn't fit properly in the Impulse I have, and I realized I needed something they would fit in. That said I currently am using Box Whites and I love them. So much more satisfying than cherry blues, and even though they're clicky they're not obnoxious.I have a sample set of halo true royals and blueberries I like a lot as well, but the 67g T1s took the cake, even though they didn't really fit in this current keyboard I have. I have a suspicion I would like Zealios, but that's a whole lot of money I don't need to be spending, so I'm not even getting samples of them.

I've been against linear switches for a long time, but I'm increasingly willing to give them a shot. Ordered a 10 pack of nk creams just to see what the fuss is about, but I also got a 10 pack of box navies just to counter balance it.

I would ABSOLUTELY get a 5 pin capable PCB if I make a custom keyboard or go looking for one. I can't understand why GMMK and Drop don't build theirs to support 5 pins. Same deal with screw in stabs. It makes the NK65 hot swap keyboards extremely tempting, but I feel like as soon as I order a small form factor board I'm in trouble - at least as long as I'm looking for full size options only I'm keeping myself at least somewhat in check.

Yeah I have a similar preference Tactile > Linear > Clicky. Although I am not a clicky fan and I prefer heavy linear switches over something like a Cherry MX Red. I too ordered C3 Kiwis, excited for those to come in! I will likely Solder them into my 90% keyboard.

I have a set of Zealios 65g right now, and yeah, they are currently the holy grail IMO.

I was the same, the Gat Blacks I got with my GMMK have begun to change my opinion, still not better than tactile but actually tolerable for typing IMO, I have a wireless MX Red keyboard that I only game with and that is all I would tolerate with that switch. Where as a heavy linear switch feels smoother to me.

Yeah unfortunately that they only go for 3-pin, but I too understand their logic. The GMMK for the price is actually a great buy IMO, just not the full custom keeb satisfaction of course, if you had to pick ONE custom option this would not be it.

I require a numpad and function row as well, so I use my 65% KBD67 MKII in tandem with my Corsair K70 which I have now reassigned many keys as macros. I kinda like the dual keeb setups now TBH, but for aesthetic purposes I prefer a single one and I could not use a 65% layout for work. I am looking forward to finishing my 90% Tofu96 but there is an alternative.

Go for a 75% layout, there is a lot of options out there in that size. And get a 20% num pad. I have a few examples linked in that spread sheet.

Here is another option from KBDFans (no hot swap):

Or from KpRepublic you could do the same thing but have them install the hot swap sockets on the PCB:

Oh believe me, I'm very tempted, but I think for now I can still hold out a while longer yet as more group buys come around and wait for corona-related shortages to settle down. Finding myself at a soldering station's probably inevitable down the line, and I've spent enough on the hobby lately that I probably need to keep it down low for a while anyway. Will definitely be watching news like a hawk though.

On the subject of linears, maybe the upcoming C3 Dragonfruit will be of interest to you. Pretty heavy, and they get progressively heavier with travel. Could be an awesome linear for you; they're tempting to me at least.

Good call haha, and if you want to go with a one weapon keeb it would be worth the wait.

Yeah, I'm definitely interested haha. I really wanted to get C3 Tangerines (67g) but the last two drops sold out in literally 1-2 min and I missed out both times (blaming my ISP lol). They seem very loved and the LTT video on switches sold me. Just can't get my hands on any, but I definitely would try and get a set of C3 Dragonfruits.

So ... anne pro 2 ... with cherry mx blue ... first impression ... ok maybe it's an attempt at a review.

So I bought a used anne pro 2 on "local" market that my sister picked up for me about a month ago and now I just got it yesterday.  The seller told me it had red switches but it got blue switches.  Big disappointment there.    I've removed the keycaps and cleaned it cause it was really dirty.  Saw that the stabilizers were lubed so that's a plus.  The switches are soldered, at least that's what I found online, so it would need to be open to do any maintenance/replacement on those if I ever want to.  Most picture were taken prior to cleaning so you can see all the stuff I removed ... didn't found any dead body or skeleton there tho.

The anne pro 2 has RGB and the lighting is kinda strong and diffuse ok through the keycap. There's some uneven lighting on the bottom row, the top row and the bigger keycaps.     The backplate is white probably to reflect the light of the rgb which looks ok even if I'm not a fan of rgb.  I haven't installed the software so I can't use the full potential of the rgb and (layer configuration and macro too) but on hardware level you have access to some solid color, a rainbow mode and some rolling through color mode.  The brightness is supposed to be adjusted with fn and + or - key but I can't seem to be able to do so on this one.  I also haven't tried the bluetooth function.

20200905_102744.thumb.jpg.f4750e5f5d5a29906a826ce2edb0f337.jpg

The keycaps feels nice and it seems to be double shot pbt so that's probably a plus there.  Even tho it's an old board they don't show any signs of gloss as you would expect with abs keycaps.  The legend is nice and not some gamery stuff.  It's easy to read when the rgb is on.  When turned off the legend is a bit hard to read and honestly I prefer white keycaps with black legend over some rgb shine through keycaps.  The secondary legend is printed on the front of the keycap and, when the rgb is turned off, it's quite difficult to see when you are not in a well lit room, it's kinda dark brown on black keycaps ... and it's even worst when the rgb is turned on as your eyes are overwhelmed by that rgb goodness and make the secondary legend close to invisible.

There is no adjustment feet so the case tilt is what you get.  Lucky me it suits me well so far and the keycap profile is nice too.  I'm not an expert in keycaps profile and I've only tried oem and dsa profile so far and I prefer dsa over oem any day ... but that profile is quite comfortable to type on with that case angle.  Would that be cherry profile ?

Now for the switches.  The keyboard has mx cherry blue and compared to my redragon tkl with outemu blue it's way better.  The sound and feeling are quite different, it's difficult to explain.  I think that the click of the cherry is a bit higher pitch than the outemu.  There are less "other" sounds in the cherry or it's more subtle and is not as annoying as the outemu.  Less clack from bottoming out and also less noise from the switches coming back up.  So far I didn't hear any spring ping and case resonance is mostly non existent.  The fact that it's smaller is probably helping there.  So sound wise the cherry mx blue are not that annoying and I would not mind that much using that to type.  The feeling of the switches ... that's something else ... the cherry feels a bit lighter than the outemu but they feels as scratchy.  It's not something I notice much when typing tho but I prefer some kailh or gateron to those.

20200904_200532.thumb.jpg.5ce028067fd85df558a5d91092fe85b0.jpg

The stabilizers came lubed, don't know if it's the previous owner or if they came that way from the factory.  There's something really annoying with the space bar, it's sticking down and have a hard time to come back up from it's down position.  I tried to take some excess lube and putting it on the stabs where I think there is some friction but it didn't improved things much.  The right shift is also sticking down a bit too.   Seriously it's the worst stabilizer experience I've had so far.  They sound better than the one on the redragon tho so I'll give them that.  The ones on the gmmk are way superior in any way just to say.

20200904_201057.thumb.jpg.01a99ce54d85b35fe0ff351bbce91d17.jpg

It's my first 60% keyboard and I think I like that quite a lot.  I'm getting used to using the fn key to access secondary function.  I'm really considering selling that one and getting either the gmmk 60% or the gk61 with the modular space bar option.   Also I thing I would like to try some clicky switches at some point.  Something with a subtle click with not so much "other" sound.  I don't want something awful loud either, just some quiet click.  Maybe something like the kailh box white.

Cherry MX Blues are clicky, but there certainly are others to try. The GMMK is a solid option, and it is hot-swap so you can try many different switch types. GMMK also has a sample pack that I would recommend getting if you decide to order.

For typing I recommend tactile or heavy linear switches, but this is just my personal preference, you may prefer something else so get what you want!

I love my Corsair keyboard with MX Blues. I have a second keyboard for my second PC that has MX Cherry Reds, and while they're quieter, I don't enjoy the experience of typing that much on it. But, the switches get the job done...

My only complaint about the Corsair keyboards is how easy they are to kill with drinks. I think I've replaced 4-6 keyboards from drink spills. Usually water is recoverable, but soda is not.

Time for some more Focus night shots. This time I tried using night sight in gcam instead of fucking with camera settings I don't know how to effectively use in opencamera. I also did a tiny bit of editing in snapseed which I'm actually really enjoying for super basic edits.

I've been told this second one looks slightly worse and less natural but I'll post it here anyway, as I like both pictures.

Well I have the gmmk in tkl and I love it.  I got the anne pro 2 just to see if I like the 60% size and I got it for cheap enough that it would probably be easy to sell without me loosing any money from that format test.  I think I like the 60% board and I plan on using one in the long run.  I'm watching prices on the gk61 and the gmmk and waiting to see if the white gmmk will be available on amazon or newegg canada.

As for the switches I tried some and plan on keeping to explore.

So far I've tried :

cherry mx brown in a used razer blackwiddow stealth 2013

box outemu blue on a barely used lexma k900

kailh brown in a rosewill K81

outemu blue on a new redragon k552

cherry mx blue on a used anne pro 2

outemu blue in my gmmk (the ones that were in the redragon which is swapable, they sounds and feel way better in the gmmk so that makes me think that the redragon case is meh for sound)

gateron yellow in my gmmk

kailh speed copper in my gmmk

I'm still trying to find out if I like the yellow or the copper better for typing ... the yellow are really smooth and feels nice but the throw is a bit long for me and I think that being linear are what is feeling off for me when I'm typing.  The kailh speed copper are really tactile and tactile point is quite sharp and really high.  So far those are the ones I like to type on the most.

Next switches I would like to try are :

kailh silent box pink or kailh silent box brown (haven't decided which one yet)

kailh speed silver (just to see if some speed linear would feel good for typing)

kailh box white (cause I would like to try a clicky that doesn't have a click jacket for once, heard that they sound not too loud and really crisp)

So for now I'm only exploring switches that I can fit in the gmmk ... I would really like to try a board with topre some day and maybe find one with buckling spring just to bring back some memory.
