Build for my brother

Guest

So I've built my first computer all ready and my brother wants a desktop. So I've made a part list and I know for a fact some people will get angry over some of the choices but I have a reason for every part.

Note: I'm not going to use PCPartPicker because I don't like it and it sometimes doesn't have things on it. If you don't like me not using PC Part Picker than you don't have to read this if you don't want too. :P

The budget is around $1600 and I'd like to buy from PC Case Gear here in Australia with the exception of the GPU which will be purchased at another store.

CPU: Intel Core i5 6400 $275

Motherboard: ASRock H170M-ITX/ac Mini ITX Motherboard $179

RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX CMK32GX4M2A2400C14 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 $415

GPU: ASUS GeForce GTX 970 DirectCU Mini OC, 4GB $489

SSD: Samsung 850 EVO Series 250GB 2.5in SSD $139

HDD: Western Digital WD Blue 1TB WD10EZEX $75

Case: Silverstone Sugo Series SG13 Small Form Factor Chassis Mesh $59

DVD Drive: LG GP60NB50 Slim External DVD Writer $35

PSU: Silverstone SX500-LG 500W Gold SFX Power Supply $135

OS: Windows 10 Pro $30

Case Fan: Noctua NF-P14S Redux 140mm 1500RPM PWM Fan $25

Now, before you all go crazy like "OMG OMG WHY GET 970 WHEN YOU CAN GET 390 FOR THE SAME PRICE AND MORE VRAM!!!!!!!!." The reason for that is I need something that can fit in the case and doesn't use that much power for the PSU. I would get an R9 Nano but they aren't really cheap ($950 AUD). One of the reasons why I am picking skylake is ebcause the motherboards they have are itx and the haswell itx motherboard aren't sold at PC Case Gear anymore. Now the CPU may seem to be underpowered so I'm wondering whether I should get z170 to OC it. Windows is that cheap because I can get it through a uni all legit and cheap; I wouldn't risk buying from a dodgy website. The reason for that ram is because the motherboard only has two slots and if I get 2x8GB there wouldn't be any upgrade to 32GB of ram. So yes I figured you might as well get it all now.

Other than that though, what do you think? And should I change anything (Besides all that stuff I said above....) Thanks.

You have to get a very high end Z170 Board, such as the ASRock OC Formula, to overclock that CPU.

Before anyone calls me out on BS.

Skylake "locked" cpus can still be overclocked.

My current build - Ever Changing.

I kinda like you're build and I don't have any suggestions I don't see a lot of small form factor builds. the parts you chose is pretty much solid in my opinion

8gb ram is borderline today, fine for gaming still. 16 would be the next step. 32gb is overkill, not needed if you arent going to do some heavy fucking WORK in your computer, or then you want to have 100 chrome tabs open at same time. i have 970 and i love it, nvidia vs amd has more things to it than just raw performance. heat output?driver support? for the cpu, if your brother is only gaming, dont bother buying a better cpu. if you need a better cpu, get an unlocked i5 .

Ok this looks pretty good. Actually very similar to a build I did earlier in 2015. I would make some changes however...

  • 32gb is too much. I understand getting more than you need with a ITX motherboard, but I promise you, 32gb is too much and will not be utilized. It just wont. Even if you start streaming and video editing and a whole bunch of other stuff 16gb is enough
  • get the 6500. Its only a tiny bit more than the 640 (at least at PLE computers)
  • dont worry about the 390. A 500w power supply will be all good for it and a 390 will fit. Just check the exact dimensions before you pick a card. The 970 is also a great card.
  • Please dont use the stock cooler. I had a i76700 overheat and shut down while benchmarking in that case with the stock cooler. I switched it to a NZXT Kraken X41 set to 02e0xhaust and it was fine. I would recommend a Noctua or Silverstone low profile cooler or a AIO set to exhaust
  • dont OC the 6400 or the 6500. You warrenty will be viod i think and you will have to do a bios update.

tell me what you think and have a great day and a happy new year :)

Thank you for replying and here's my opinion. I know 32GB is a lot, but to get 2x8gb wouldn't allow to upgrade to 32GB of ram. I think maybe if I can get a single 16GB stick it would work out best and keep the price down. Are you sure an r9 390 will fit? It's a pretty tiny case and there aren't really any small r9 390s. I don't think I would oc anymore. Also the stock cooler should be fine as it only has a 65w TDP on this cpu unlike the i7 which has hyper threading and all that.

I had it overheat will a fury X on intake so our situations are a little different. The a stock cooler would be fine but it will be loud and pretty warm. I think a 390 would fit but I would check. You'll be able to find max gpu length on their website. As for the RAM, I would just go with 16gb. What are you doing because unless you are doing serious production stuff, which you woulkdnt be doing with a 6400 or 6500 anyway, then dont go for it.

Only things to change:

Get a 6500 instead of 6400, only costs a little more and gives you around 20% performance gain.

You don't need 32gb, and most likely never will in the next 5 years, but do not go with one 16gb stick! Very poor performance, as it will literally half memory mandwidth, so I wouldn't recommend this. If you think this build will last more than 5 years you could consider 32gb but otherwise 2x8 is fine.

But isn't teh i5 6400 only clocked a little bit higher?

The 6500 actually has a pretty big clock speed improvement for only around 10-15 bucks more. It has a 3.2ghz frequency versus the 2.7 of the 6400. Which translates to around a 18-19% improvement. As well the turbo frequency is 3.6 vs. 3.3 which is also about a 9% improvement. It only costs about 5% more but gives you quite a large improvement, so generally the 6500 is the best i5 to go with unless you are overclocking. The 6600 just isn't worth it since it only has a .1 ghz bump in frequency compared to the 6500. I personally think the 6500 is well worth the extra few bucks.
