Could this cause a GPU to pop ?

Dicehunter

So I bought a 980 ti matrix a few days ago and it arrived whilst I was at work so a house mate installed it for me and put on the latest drivers and then proceeded to switched off my rig.

When I got home, I turned the rig on and in the middle of reading an email there was a huge pop, Bright white flash, Horrible smell of smoke and what looks like black dust sprayed across the inside of my window, Needless to say I switched off everything and took it out and put my 980 ti classified back in that I was selling to someone and everything is working perfectly.

Now the card was correctly seated and had both 8 pin cables in but apart from it being a simple faulty capacitor could it have been the following ?

Now the 8 pin cables looked like they were in correctly as my house mate has built a lot of rigs but could he have accidently switched the 6+2 pins around ? By that I mean used the 2 pin with the opposite 6 pin and vice versa, Could this have caused the big boom ?

I would not trust turning on the PC with the same PSU. Borrow your friends psu and try to turn on your rig to see what may have been fried.

The PSU is fine it's been tested :)

Well you can't put the 6+2 pin connection in the wrong way (same goes for the PCI-E 8 pin) since they are keyed...so people can't put them in wrong.

That's a first, hearing a capacitor blowing up.

You're sure it's the capacitor on the GPU? You can visually see a blown up capacitor? Mind taking a picture of it? I'd love to see what that looks like  :P

Turns out it's a VRM fault according to an employee from the place I bought it from *8Pack of OCUK* but to take a picture I'd have to take it apart and that would void my warranty and then I wouldn't be able to RMA.

I see. That's fine! Out of curiosity, why are you switching from a Classified to a Matrix?

Purely aesthetics plus I'm selling the card to a friend who's giving me nigh on the full new price for the Classified so I can't complain ^_^

Cool! Btw, off topic, would you mind (in case you haven't already), fill out this poll? It's a survey on coil whine on the 980 Ti's, I would very much appreciate it!

Workmate of mine just sent me this, He got his Matrix from the same store this morning, Could it be a faulty batch ?

84'c at 100% fan speed at stock clocks/volts doesn't seem right.

My replacement 980 Ti Matrix arrived earlier today and the temps are amazingly low and it's so quiet, Shame the first one was faulty though.
