Upgrade for i7-6700k OR wait for more unlocked chips

Upgrading to the new Z170 chipset, board and ram is a done deal:

Asus ROG Maximus VIII Formula (confirmed but not yet released)

G Skill 32Gb 2666MHz CL15 (4x8Gb or 2x16Gb - havent decided yet)

CPU will me an i7 and unlocked.

The question is: I have to wait for the board to be released, should I wait for a new CPU instead of going with the 6700k or is this a solid choice ? Any confirmation and details on future Skylake i7 unlocked chips?

-- Note that I will not buy the Extreme edition ones cause $$$$$ I am talking a price range 300-450. And yes this is for gaming, programming and soft simulation(rendering) but nothinggggggg to be consider as a life changer.

Thank you all in advance!!

If your rendering, ditch the Z170 entirely and go for a 5820k and X99

Wait till the Mobo is released. First of all - you will then see what CPU's are announced & shit and if you buy all the parts later and at the same time your warranty will not start when you don't use the parts yet you know what I mean.

you're already running haswell i5

if I was upgrading, I'd go for X99 and look for the upcoming Broadwell-E

^This

If you actually have the need for the extra threads the 6700k provides, then X99 is a much better choice. If you don't, then a "humble" i5 6500 would perform exactly the same, and you can even sell it later down the road to get, say, a Kaby Lake i5/7.

Yes I will buy all my parts together :) with X99 I really dont know... I havent checked prices but most people say it is extremly expensive and as I said my rendering is almost zero so I will not go for thr x99 just for that.. Is there anything that appeals to gamers in that chipset?? I've always think as x99 more for video editing and stuff like that.

My main objective here as I said is gaming. I have a fantastic system for that but I will give my my cpu-board-ram to my wife and upgrade to a new platform. Z170 or x99 ??

If z170 is a go I would probably wait for that board and ofc the cpu, if x99 is a go the 5820k will probably be the choice in terms of cpu, but boards.... I need help there (asus or msi) asthetics is a strong point!!! And ofc not above 400

Thanks to u all

I am not sure the climate for pricing in Portugal but in the US, x99 is actually cheaper than Z170.  Might not be the case there, and MSI has better customer support than Asus, but Asus has more quality components on their boards.  It's a toss-up at times.  As for which to go for - if you can make do with what you have now - CES and Computex are around the corner, and we'll have more information on Broadwell-E in the next few months, which should be out and around by the summer.  Between all of it, though - if you can get an x99 Pro from Asus and 5820k - you'd be golden.  Or the MSI Krait x99A.  Excellent board for the money.

imho going to skylake is not an upgrade, you'd be better off just buying 4790K and saving on the MoBo and RAM replacement

X99 appeals in tri-SLI / quad-SLI setups for gamers

also quad channel memory looks BA aesthetically and some e-peen points for a good measure

any X99 board Is great

MSI X99S SLI PLUS and X99A SLI PLUS is a great board in matte black and comes pretty cheap.

EDIT:

even if you're getting a complete new system getting 4790K on Z97 would be much cheaper than Z170 with nothing to lose

If you are just gaming, you'll be fine with an i5 6500 / 6600 + z170 mobo + 16gb of DDR4. No need to go any higher than that. Grab yourself a nice cooler, OC it, and you are set for greatness.

I think you are both correct... Unfortunatly 4790k is a rarity here in Portugal and the 3 pieces of hardware i need will be almost the same price ( z97 vs z170 ) give or take 100.

To go with x99 would be easier in terms of availability of parts here but i think it would be a shallow decision at least for me. I would love the z170 setup I've just described and I will almost certainly go for it my problem is the cpu... I would like to build my system in February-April this gives me 3 months for intel to announce release and then export to Portugal but as u said most chips come out during summer...

I meen is the 6700k that bad ? Some benchmarking point that he is not that good.... but is it bad ? Is it that bad that the 4790k or the 5820k crush it like a bug ?? Maybe the 5820k will... but if I Had to decided right now !! Will this be a bottleneck ? Is overclocking good in this model ?

I know its a mess...

Which means that with an i7 6700k it would be even better xDDD

Thanks

It wouldn't be "even better", it would be "a complete waste of money". Seriously, use that difference to invest into a better mouse / keyboard / headset, hell, even buy a 2nd monitor or donate it to me. But don't use it on a 6700k, it's just not worth it AT ALL.

The 6600k would be perfect if you are just gaming, but hyper-threading with the 6700k would be useful if you multi-task while gaming.  Skype, steam, origin, web browser, videos, etc.  The 5820k and 4790k aren't -better- over the 6700k, they're just inherently good on value, but that's here in the US.  It's likely different there.  if you are set on the 6700k, it's faster in IPC over the 4790k and 5820k, but has two fewer cores than the 5820k.  Now if the 5820k is cheaper than the 6700k, then get that, as it's more cores and plenty fast.

I have to agree with survivor here.... the i7 is not useless. It could have a very specific target public in witch i fit. And yes i do multitask while gaming.

The reason why people are suggesting the X99 platform is so that rendering will take advantage of the extra cores an decimate both the 4790k and the 6700k. People are recommending the 4790k because it is usually cheaper and will perform the same as the 6700k in gaming. The 5820k will not bottleneck anything and will also be good for gaming (the 4790k and 6700k edge it out by only a few FPS)

Ok ok but the x99 vs z170 in terms of asthetics is a lost case in my opinion, sure there r some nice boards and they sure are expensive.... msi x99 godlike is one of them. MAYBE ITS JUST ME BUT I love the ROG armor in their Maximus Formula boards... It means nothing in fps but it looks good and that is a plus !

The x99 for me doesnt make any sense i see the public it wants to target but I am not there. Z170 for me.

Will wait for more cpus and the release of the board.

Thank u all this is a done deal :)
