i7-2600k overclock throttling with low core temps.

Flokij

Hey all, brand new here but I’m hoping the friendly community can help with my overclocking problems. Let me start by giving my system specs.

I7 2600k @3.4ghz (stock)
Asus P8P67 LE
GTX 560 OC
Corsair H100i
16G Gskill Ripjaws
Seasonic X-series 850W
Windows 7 x64
(Nothing else seems that important here)

Now to explain the problem. At any overclock Prime95 causes it to throttle back to the stock clock speed after 2-5 minutes of running. Sounds like thermal throttling, but the H100i keeps my max temps below 60 C. I have ran numerous different overclock settings from 3.5ghz up to 4.5ghz and that doesn’t really effect the problem at all. For most of my day to day tasks the throttling has no noticeable effect, but occasionally it does bottleneck me.

That being said, I’m definitely no pro when it comes to overclocking. My MoBo has an automatic overclock tuner, so that was the first OC I ran. This caused it to hiccup when I first power on the system, ran at 4.4ghz, and still throttled. Next I switched to X.M.P. tuner, ran it at 3.8ghz, no hiccup on start up, but it still throttled. So now I’m pretty lost as to what to troubleshoot. Any help that you guys can give me would be great! And let me know if you need any more information about my system.

first of all, HOW THE HELL ARE YOU GETTING 60 C WITH AN INTEL

secondly, those temps with an h100i are ridiculous, i suspect a problem with something else

The temps are pretty normal with a 2600k.

with an fx 9590 and an h100i im getting 30 under load

In that case, there's something wrong with your software or temp sensor.

Yeah I thought so as well.

I believe it can throttle due to an unstable overclock. So is it happening on stock settings? Also don't use prime 95. Is the voltage on auto? IF so change it to manual mode and set it manually.

At stock speed there is no throttling. Voltage is on auto, have any suggestion to what to set it at? And what do you recommend other than Prime95?

Try OCCT instead of Prime95.

Also, don't use auto voltage when oc'ing. Try starting at 1.2v and push up from there if needed.

I think it's getting way too much voltage with auto settings. I used to run the Small FFT test in P95 to stress my 2600k and it loved it.

I recommend aidia 64. Change teh voltage to the default voltage (What I mean by this is cahnge the voltage manualy to the default one, which might be 1.2 or whatever). Also don't use those auto OC things as they can sometiems set things to high.

Got OCCT installed and I'm in my BIOS now. I have DRAM vlt  VCCIO vlt and PCH vlt. Put all to 1.2? or just certain ones?

It seemed to require me to hit the auto tuner to let me tune it at all. But yea it was drawing up to 1.38v on auto

not that i can find

though i just realized my ambient temps are way lower than normal...

Vcore.

Vcore.

Im not seeing anything directly saying vcore voltage. I have cpu offset voltage which I just set to the lowest range of values at .005

In that case, you're going to have to tinker with the offset voltage to get the oc stable.

Ive been running OCCT for about 5mins, and it started throttling about there. Running at 4.0ghz(101.5x40) my max core voltage is at 1.33V. Is this to high for it to be stable?

You can lower the voltage with the offset if you feel it's too high.

Yeah I did that actually on this run. Max voltage is at 1.32 now but im still getting throttle. What im noticing is that the CPUTIN temperature runs much lower typically around 27 C then spikes up to 35-36 when it throttles.
