Been trying to find that board used for ages, but seems all its owners have about as much attachment to it as us SR-2 owners to our boards and don't sell it. I suppose I understand the feeling.

Yup I got the board for 175 shipped with a i7 930 that was binned for subzero. I also got the 980X for cheap at $60

Yeah, I once saw one for ~500 USD a few months ago. It's about the same with the EVGA SR-2 (I've tried to get one as a spare for a while). They're extremely hard to find, and when you do find one, it's usually the absolute opposite of affordable.

i7 980s do not have QPI links, and therefore can not be paired with another i7 980.

It's quite ironic really. The X58 OC was the last X58 board to be made and there was a shit tonne of them left when X58 was replaced by Sandy. To that ends you could easily pick up the X58 OC for around £70. They were practically giving the fucking things away.

 

Then all of a sudden some bright spark realises "hey you can chuck a Xeon in there" and now they're worth a fortune.

I7 980s still sell for £200+ currently on eBay. Not sure about my RIIIE though.

 

I remember not too long after getting my 980 I realised I could have gotten a Xeon hex core, albeit it being clocked much lower at stock, but it would have had the full 6.4 GHz QPI or is it Uncore speed.

@BhavEbay is only really good for a select amount of items. Most of the time it is overpriced. I got my i7 980X for $60 over on reddit.com/r/hardwareswap. Why didn't you get a 980X?

I didn't know about trading outside of eBay / forums at the time, though I would have bought a Xeon hex core off eBay instead if I had known about them at the time.

I got mine fairly inexpensively, $175 with a i7 930. The Xeons work in almost every X58 board that supported Gulftown.
