Wanted to play Minecraft today randomly, but oh wait! My 980Ti can't run it?

I used to host Minecraft servers for the community and figured it'd be fun to relive some fun moments! I just reinstalled my OS a few days ago to have a clean start so i was searching for some games. I'd assume my i7 4790K @ 4.4GHz & GTX 980Ti would be enough to run Minecraft.. but this is what i get.

I get around 150 FPS on the highest settings with only 30% GPU usage for about 2 minutes then the game get's REALLY gittery, freezing then unfreezing extremely quickly. You can see it on the graphs where it only uses 20% of my GPU for a good half-second then goes to 0%. No other game i have installed does this.. only Minecraft? I have reinstalled Java and Video drivers but I've not got a clue.

Sounds to me like it could be a CPU issue. Have you run other (more CPU intensive) games for as long as you've run Minecraft? Could be the OC being unstable.

I have. I have run games like BF4 and Crysis 3 at maximum settings with no problem.

For around the same amount of time as when you run minecraft? Have you monitored the CPU usage of any of them by chance?

I have, usually around 100% GPU ( sometimes going under ) and if i'm remembering right, not too high on CPU.

Welp I just fixed it. Give it to Minecraft to only be using 1GB of my RAM. Allocated 6GB and fixed ( so far ).

And I agree, So far Minecraft.. a game with 16x16 textures for a blocky world is running at 100 FPS on a $2500 computer.. I'd expect.. more.

Minecraft is CPU bound.

True. But a 4790K should be a little better than 100 FPS on a game like this, Kinda killing it for me now.

If I remember correctly, it runs on one core.

Also. If you change the textures or add mods, the game runs worse.

It is not a well made game.

That's what I had thought too, upon further inspection it seems to acknowledge the others and work off them.

I never have high single core usage when playing. But that could just be task manager not knowing what is happening.

Is the CPU usage spread out across the cores?
