Ive heard that AMD cards can xfire with other cards. What cards can a 7950 xfire with other than a 280 or 280X?

Gtx 780. But really, the list is big-ish. The 7970, 280,280x,7950. Correct me if Im wrong, but the 7800 series? They do crossfire with the 280x and 280 as they are the exact same gpu.

Is there any 6000 series cards that I can xfire with?

The HD 7800 series and R9-270 series (and R7-265) use the "Curaçao" (AKA "Pitcarni") GPU core.

The HD 7970, 7950, R9-280X, and R9-280 are based on the "Tahiti" core design.

The only rare exception is the HD 7870 XT -- a cut down version of "Tahiti."

No, you can only Crossfire GPU's that use the same GPU core architecture design.

You can Crossfire your HD 7950 with any of the following:

  • HD 7970 (any variant)
  • HD 7950 (any variant)
  • HD 7870 XT
  • R9-280X
  • R9-280

AMD hasn't updated these charts in some time to include the R-300 series, but still quite informative.

Keep in mind that crossfire will essentially make each card perform as fast as the lowest tier card...

What about 300 series

No, the new R-300 series will not work with your HD 7950. They are completely different from the "Tahiti" chip that your GPU uses.

Keep in mind that crossfire will essentially make each card perform as fast as the lowest tier card...

No that is not true.

They will run at each of their own respective performance; you do not get the weaker of the two.

What I am saying is:

  • HD 7950 + 7970 Crossfire =/= 7950 + 7950 performance

The performance with a HD 7950 + 7970 in crossfire will perform somewhere right in between HD 7970 + 7970, and HD 7950 + 7950.

It may have been as you said with previous generation GPUs, but have changed since the HD 5000 series.

HD 5870 + 5850 Crossfire: http://www.legitreviews.com/ati-radeon-hd-5870-5850-crossfire-mixing-video-cards_1107

HD 7000 + R-200 Crossfire: http://www.legitreviews.com/amd-radeon-7000-radeon-r200-series-mixed-crossfire-testing_126124

As you can see, HD 3870 + 3850 Crossfire was significantly lower in performance compared to HD 3870 + 3870 performance.

The two GPUs also run at asynchronous frequencies (the higher clocked card is not required to downclock to match frequencies of the slower operating card).
