x4 860k 4.5 ghz paired with gtx 970

my friend wants to upgrade his gtx 750 ti to gtx 970 and was wondering how much will his cpu will bottleneck a gtx 970. he plays on 1080p screen, and games like gta5, skyrim, fallout 4, sc2, xcom, valve games, and civ 5.

There will be a pretty big bottleneck, either upgrade the cpu as well or get a 380 instead otherwise he will be wasting money.

even with a 380 it'll be a waste. likes nvidia? 960?  about the same-ish as a 380. cpu still won't push it

I don't think it'll be that bad. I have an i3 4160, and my GTX 960 hits 100% WAY before it. In fact, I've only seen it brought to its knees when running around Novigrad in The Witcher 3, which is probably the most CPU-intensive area from any of the games I own. Well, that, and modded Skyrim at its most extreme. Keep in mind that this is a hyperthreaded dual-core, and will likely be outperformed by the unlocked quad-core Athlon x4 860k, especially when overclocked, despite the Athlon's lower IPC.

Furthermore, to upgrade from the Athlon x4 860k means he'll have to move to a better platform, so it isn't a bad idea to save for that and maybe go Z170 of even X99 later for his upgrade.

he wants to save for AMD zen/+ am4 or Intel Cabylake/Cannonlake z270 cpu and AMD Arctic/GCN 2.0 or Nvidia Pascal gpu. he has overclocked his x4 860k to 4.5ghz from the stock 3.9 ghz.

Dont go any higher than a 380 with an Athlon 860k.

The Athlon 860k is a great little CPU for gamers on a console budget but it can only achieve 1080p 60fps at max with only a midtier GPU like the GTX 960/R9 380.

If your friend really wants to save grab a r9 380 for $180 on newegg and call it a day.

Then start saving for a good PC in the future.

In some games yes other nope if 60 FPS is his goal he will be in most games fine! :P (My own tests was at 4.0GHz...)

gta5, skyrim, fallout 4, sc2, xcom, valve games, and civ 5. (I marked the games I think will struggle a bit... Skyrim will drop FPS some places...)

As almost everyone else said, get him to get an R9 380 instead.

That works to but what if he upgrades the CPU later? :P

It still would be fine?

Well the 860K only struggles at 2.5 of the listed games so I do not think he needs a CPU very badly yet! ;)

Well the 860K only struggles at 2.5 of the listed games so I do not think he needs a CPU very badly yet! ;)

Good to know i will tell him that he good to go and to try to overclock slightly more to 4.7 ghz or 5 ghz if he is lucky to improve skyrim fps dips and to a lesser degree gta5 and sc2. He said that he upgrade late 2016/ early 2017 to either amd zen or intel cabylake with either amd arctic island gcn 2.0 or nvidia pascal gpu.

Good call wait for Zen is probably best he can do if he wanna play SC2! :D

(this is the biggest problem game also if he wanna bump a bit more FPS 2133MHz CL9 RAM or better will help!) ;)

My Phenom pushes my GTX 580 overclocked at 900mhz core and 4.2ghz memory, the only game it can't max out the 580 is CSGO but that's redundant anyway as it's at high FPS.

My 580 is almost equal to a 960.

you can get the cpu to 10Ghz....... it really isn't going to help. it's the architecture of the cpu and the way it treats information. and i'd like to change the card to a 270. i think a 380 would be massive overkill.
