Water cooled GTX 970 running hot?

Go to solution Solved by Lord_Karango17,

Try reapplying the thermal paste/ ensure that the block is mounted properly.

I also have a 240mm rad, and with a much higher power draw gpu in the loop, the core temps only peak out at the high 50C

Hey guys, first post here so go easy, but I need help with my new water cooling set up. I just installed a custom watercooling loop on my computer, and for some reason my GTX 970 is still running at 80c when benchmarking. My cpu is in the same loop, and never goes over 45c. My loop order is tank/pump, gpu, cpu, radiator, back to pump. I'm very confused as I've seen other water cooled set ups online run the 970 at 45 to 50c under load.

My specs are

i5 4670K

Nvidia GTX 970

Samsung 500gb SSD

16gb Corsair Vengence 1600

Xonar Essence STX

Maximus Hero VI

Corsair AX760 PSU

EK Coolstream 240 XE

EK-XRES Revo D5 PWM

EK-VGA Supremacy

EK-Supremacy EVO

I'll attach a few pictures of my set up. I have a couple of ideas but I want to get a second opinion before I do anything. First off, when I first set up the pump I had the flow going the wrong way through the VGA block, perhaps that damaged it and I need to rebuild it? Or, maybe I need to install more heatsinks on my video card? I have a fan blowing air from the bottom of the case onto the graphics card so I don't know why that would be heating up. Do you guys have any idea what might be wrong?

It looks like your VRM's aren't cooled properly.

With a lower power card like the 970, they will get pretty warm, but nothing that will cause problems in the short term.

Thanks guys! Turns out the block was mounted properly, but the thick plastic washers they gave me didn't allow for full contact with the GPU. So I replaced them with skinny ones, and my temps are WAY lower. Just ran Heaven 4.0 on ultra without breaking 30c!! Stoked!

One last thing, you guys expressed some concern about my VRMs not being cooled properly, is the card safe to overclock in its current condition? Or should I order some heatsinks online?

I'd get some small heatsinks to be on the safe side, especially if you go pushing voltage (Which under water you totally should)

Besides everyone above, maybe just a badly binned 970?

wat...?  "badly binned" isn't going to make a card run 30-40c hotter under similar conditions lol

I mean it's a long shot but it shouldn't be ruled out.

yes it should be, the only way you're going to see temps like that on a watercooled 970 is if it's voltage modded & has unlocked TDP with 1.6 volts to the GPU.

"bad bin" isn't a thing when you're talking about temps, as stock voltage & TDP limits are always in place, sure one card may have slightly higher voltage, but that will not make a 40c difference.  The difference will be a few degrees at best, considering all cards are built to extremely similar specs.
