Can i upgrade my dad's old, crap pc?

I setup mt dads old vista PC and if i can add more ram or something, its a gateway GM5416E it has 2GB or ram, i believe DDR2.

32  bit operating system, Intel® Core2 CPU.

The graphics card is absolute crap and the fan hits the sound card if it is moved or anything.

Finding compatible parts will be a chore unless you're willing to do your own Scrapyard Wars style part hunt.

 

You could very likely build a newer, more powerful machine, for not a lot of money.

Here is a real cheap computer that you can build. Idk if he needs anything specific, so I just kinda, tossed a meh gpu in there, doesn't sound like he games, but this GPU will at least give him some small RTS games to play.

I know I cant play any hardcore games on anything like a budget build but I do play some lower quality games, my main problem is that it takes me 3 hours to render and upload my YouTube videos, my internet isn't awful and ik uploading isn't much to do with the PC but I can't have my computer on for 2 hours to render it.

I also need 4gbs to use my elgato

The best upgrade you can deliver is to buy an ssd and install anything that isn't windows vista or ME.

Buy a new pc, it doesn't make sense to invest a lot of money in this one and it won't give you enough performance for what you want anyway. Give me a budget, I'll try to come up with a reasonable build for that price.

Not a bad system tbh, LGA 775 parts are cheap except motherboards have gone up in value. So in your case I would throw it up on ebay for parts and you could get around $75 for it if you get lucky Also that is just a 32bit operating system. The Core 2 series are 64bit chips so as long as you have the RAM you can install a 64bit operating system.

Get a Q6600 and a ssd. This should help in basically everything. You could switch over to a lightweight Linux distro to make things a bit faster or Windows 10 since it is probably the lightest (non-modified) Windows right now.
