Could I play without a throttle but with just a joystick?

I have a Gravis Blackhawk digital, do I need a throttle?

(the answer is yes to the title)

No, however, If you wish to play Star Citizen (combat portion) on a joystick alone you will need a lot more buttons than is on the Gravis Blackhawk.  The Logitech Extreme Pro 3D is a good choice but you will rely on the holding right ctrl for landing.  Otherwise, you can go with it alone.

You can play it with whatever controller combination tickles your fancy, pretty much. There was one guy on the RSI forum using dual throttles a while ago. :D

I personally use dual joysticks to great effect and I don't think I'll be going back to throttle any time soon. You can also do joystick + keyboard and it's pretty decent.

That said, the controller parity is currently not top notch. The learning curve for playing with a joystick is quite a bit steeper than mouse and kayboard. Basically the main problem that the devs and the community have been trying to find solutions to for the past year is that people can aim gimballed weapons with mouse, but not with a joystick. The current solution is that larger, non-gimbaled weapons hit harder, but the general consensus is that it is not enough.

Some people use what they call HOJAM/ HOMAS - basically stick in the left hand for steering and mouse in the right for aiming gimbals. I could never get used to that one myself. You can also use TrackIR and VR headsets to aim with your head while flying joystick, which is pretty nice when it works. But it works properly only once in a few builds at this point. :)
