Should I upgrade my GPU?

quarien

Hi,

I'm thinking about upgrading my current GPU mostly because of the in-game performance and graphics quality, and also I'm planning to upgrade my 1200p monitor to something with a bit more pixels, probably 4K.

My current setup is:

CPU Intel i7 950 @3.0GHz

RAM 6x2 Corsair HyperX (capable of 2GHz, currently 1333MHz)

GPU Gigabyte GTX770 2GB

Motherboard  P6X58D-E

SSD Plextor M6S 256GB

HDD 2x1TB WD Black

PSU Corsair AX850

Previously I had GTX580, which was *fine*, however it died and I had to improvise, so I bought GTX770, which was the best I could do with my budget. Right now it's fine. however with newer games it's really hard to achieve stable 60FPS with decent settings. And with my future plan to move towards 4K - gaming is going to be even harder.

My plan is to upgrade my CPU cooling (currently stock), overclock it and overlock the RAM to  1800-2000 MHz) and buy GTX980 or GTX980Ti.

Is that a good idea, or should I save my money for a bit bigger upgrade involving CPU etc?

how urgent is your gpu upgrade? i'd suggest sticking around for nvidia's new cards if you're really wanting to do high res.

if you dont play too many cpu-heavy games i dont think the cpu is gonna form a problem, especially at high resolutions.

Hold off if you want to do 4k, there are no cards that can handle 4k 60fps at higher settings, usually you have to bring things down to a mix of medium with a few things at high.

Well, okay. I'll wait.

However, would the rest of my setup bottleneck GPUs like GTX980(Ti)? In new AAA titles, like Just Cause 3 etc.?
