The Philips X2 are on sale for $199. One of the best set of cans you can get at this price.

I second this.

Well headphones means without a mic, so for $100 I would get HD 558's for open or M40x's for closed, if you could stretch your budget to $200 the Fidelio X2's are on a amazing sale right now there usually like $300.

A headset comes with a microphone. Headphones don't.

Honestly, at 200$, you don't really have options. Every decent headset (Beyerdynamic COP with mic, Sennheiser G4ME ZERO/ONE, Audio Technica ATH-AG1/ADG1) costs upwards of 200$. And below that, for a headset your best option really is the HyperX Cloud II.

Your only real option besides the HyperX Cloud II and spending more money is using a headphone and an Antlion ModMic. However, the latter costs 45$, and you're not really going to see a difference from the 100$ HyperX Cloud II and some 150$ headphone like the Audio Technica ATH-M50x, AKG K272 or Sennheiser HD558.

Your best option is to ask whether your friend needs the microphone. If he doesn't, then you have plenty of options for 200$ headphones, such as Sennheiser HD598, Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro, Beyerdynamic DT770...

One thing you should avoid is headsets from gaming peripheral brands like Razer. SteelSeries and Logitech might be worth looking into. Linus seemed to like the Siberia Elites.

I own and use, sorted from newest to oldest: SteelSeries 6Gv2. Microsoft SideWinder X4. Mionix Naos 7000. Zowie EC1 Evo. Microsoft SideWinder X8. Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0. Dell U2414H. Samsung P2270H. AKG K273 Pro. Sennheiser HD555. Razer Goliathus Speed Medium. Func 1030 L. Qpad CT Medium.

I used to own: Razer DeathAdder 3G. Razer Krait. IntelliMouse Optical 1.1. SteelSeries QcK.
