As of now no.

it's still no, so I don't see why it's so broad.

Which i7 and in what way do you mean by "compete"? The i7 can be anything from 1st-generation all the way through Skylake, encompassing quad-core with HT up to 8-core with HT. You need to be more specific. In many ways the FX-8350 (or 8320E if you want one with a lower TDP) is a viable processor, particularly if you're a heavy multi-tasker.

depends on what you want it for.

 

in numbercrunching: the 8-core fx chips do decently well, certainly when considering their price.

in gaming: depends on your game, in games that can use more than 4 cores it *may* be worth it, in games that dont, you're wasting power and money.

If we're talking of recent generation i7s no, for any purpose there isn't really a reason to buy a FX over an i7

The older ones, yes, to a certain extent when the right workload is applied. Haswell, no, not really. Still, if all you need the processor for is multithreaded performance and nothing else, they are pretty good value. Gaming still needs high single-threaded performance for some things so while an FX will work, it won't perform as well as an Intel part.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.

There is a lot of i7 processors. He didn't ask in what category. Is he comparing a 5960x to a AMD Cpu? There are many factors.

If you're comparing the two in a performance scenario and can afford both it makes no sense to not choose an i7 that was my point the topic at hand is can a FX compete with it which it certainly can't and pricing isn't a big issue if you Intel Xeon route or get i7 3770K for cheap which is still better than a FX but that's offtopic
