Phenom II x6 1XXXT vs Pentium G3258

My mum is right now using an Athlon x2 7750BE, which is a AM2/AM2+ CPU. It really gets slow in Windows 10, so i want to get her a new CPU/Motherboard for Christmas. Now im not sure on wether it would make more sense to get a 6 core Phenom, which would most likely work with the current motherboard (I'm going to have to double check but im quite certain), or a new Pentium + Motherboard + RAM (because i need ddr3). She's manly working with Microsoft Office, browsing (Google Chrome) etc. so nothing really demanding. I basicly just want it to be snappy. The other specs of the PC are as follows: GPU - Sapphire HD 6670, 4gb RAM, Seagate Barracuda.

For basic usage, really either one would be fine. The AM3 socket Phenom II X6 processors will work on AM2+ boards, but only if the board manufacturer has supported them with a BIOS update.

The Phenom II itself is compatible with AM2+.

Phenom II x6 would be better then the pentium. It is from AMD's line before Bulldozer, so it is a TRUE 6 cores.

The Phenom II x6 110t is about par with a FX 6300 which is par with an i3 4160.

Yeah, just not 100% sure because it's an OEM Motherboard. I guess the phenom would make more sense because i'd be spending somewhere around 150€ for the pentium + motherboard + RAM vs 60-80 for the Pentium (used).

not withhold general purpose desktops

Source: me, used a dual core laptop Phenom II and it was not bad at all

Sure but women likes having many windows open so I say more cores is better! (also they may not need to swap board)

Honestly, I feel like the biggest perceivable increase in speed in an old desktop like that is to add an SSD. That would also be a much more cost effective alternative to a new CPU and potentially a new motherboard, RAM and PSU. You could use the SSD for Windows, MS Office, Chrome and such, while retiring the Barracuda HDD to longer term storage for photos, videos, etc.

Usually the speed isn't much of a problem, i used a barracuda as boot drive before and especially with win10 it boots up really quick etc. The problem is programs beeing really laggy and often times seeing the CPU at 100% on both cores while using powerpoint. Sometimes Chrome randomly doesn't respond and crashes. It's the CPU i had in use before and it bottlenecked a HD 4350, which, i didn't know actually was possible lol.
