i5 or i7 for directx12?

As we know, everyone will profit from directx12 because of multithreaded support and more.

Higher clock speed and more physical cores would be the best option, but not everyone can afford a 5820k or better Setup.

Lets dont talk about amd cpu's, they suck and power consumption = 300 ps3's together.

Im very curious if an i7 performs much better than an i5 because of hyperthreading?

Overclocking both cpus to the same frequency, lets say i5 4690k @ 4,6ghz and i7 4790k @ 4,6 ghz and rest of the system the same (mobo, gpu e.g. r9 390)

The only difference would be that the i7 has hyperthreading.

 

IF the results of the i7 are better in gaming, than we can say that i7 users will profit more through directx12 than i5 users.(If developers do their jobs correctly)

 

What are your thoughts? Im very curious about this

I dont know for sure, but I think that the i7 would only be marginally better.

games have had multithreaded support long before DX12...

 

dx12 takes load off the CPU and relies more on the GPU so technically more cores/threads will be less necessary

 

but very few games use DX12 atm so just get the CPU you can afford

Does BF4 support DX12?

I know that it supports AMD's dead Mantle, but I'm thinking of firing BF4 up again.

 

Only 1 game in beta does currently. Its very early doors for DX12 so dont expect any games till late 2016 >

Ive read somewhere that mantle helps alot if hyperthreading is enabled, and the i3's profit from it so much

is that true? could someone make a short test with hyperthreading and without in bf4?

if that is true than it would make more sense to buy an i7 over an i5 for "futureproofness"

Most things surrounding DX12 are still speculation. There are promises of performance gain, better multi-threaded support, etc etc. But no DX12 titles is (as far as I'm aware) available in final release to the public. Until we have 2 or 3 titles, nothing is certain.

Hm well thats not really much. I guess its just marketing stuff to get the 6 or 8 or even the upcoming 10 cores skylake.

The i7 blows the doors off the i5 in many DX11 games, and since those are the games we can play right now I'd say that's more important.

Arma 3 will get a directx12 update soon, and since this game is very cpu intensive i guess then we can really see what directx12 has to offer.

Is your 4690k oced? And are u able to run any game on maxed out settings with the i5 and titan x combo?

But they haven't had MT rendering support. DX12 does take load off the CPU by removing some inefficiencies, but the main performance boost comes from MT rendering. For that you need CPU with more cores/threads. And more fps = more calculations for the CPU to do for each frame as well.

I played BF4 under Mantle, and even though I saw significant performance improvement since AMD's DX11 overhead is horrendous, I was still dropping below 60 fps with my 4670K at 4.5 GHz. All 4 cores would hit 100%. 

 

So in fact, CPUs with more cores/threads will benefit more from DX12 than i5's for example (in most cases). Unless you're running a game that's only draw-call heavy, with light game logic.

No, it isn't OC'd, and most games. For a number of games, I don't really see the difference between high and Ultra, so I usually drop back a few settings here and there so the Titan doesn't kick out as much heat. It's really not that much of an interesting card, just powerful.

In newer games my FX-8370 crushes the 860K but in older titles the 860K wins! :P

From what i've heard, dx 12 will be able to take advantage of hyperthreading and will see a benefit.

Only 1 game in beta does currently. Its very early doors for DX12 so dont expect any games till late 2016 >

If not 2017, it takes forever for a new API to actually see mainstream use, and by then GPU will have caught up.

But they haven't had MT rendering support. DX12 does take load off the CPU by removing some inefficiencies, but the main performance boost comes from MT rendering. For that you need CPU with more cores/threads. And more fps = more calculations for the CPU to do for each frame as well.

I played BF4 under Mantle, and even though I saw significant performance improvement since AMD's DX11 overhead is horrendous, I was still dropping below 60 fps with my 4670K at 4.5 GHz. All 4 cores would hit 100%. 

 

So in fact, CPUs with more cores/threads will benefit more from DX12 than i5's for example (in most cases). Unless you're running a game that's only draw-call heavy, with light game logic.

A DICE dev said on beyond3d forums that they couldn't make it work properly in BF4, they always got worse performance. So it seems that even though it's theoretically possible, it's very difficult and perhaps even impossible with most game engines. 

And performance improvement was nowhere near as big as with Mantle or DX12. Why do you think Firaxis went for Mantle in Civ: Beyond Earth rather than MT rendering under DX11?

well just writing regular code that is multithreaded is already extremely difficult, so i highly doubt many game developers would even attempt to write their own multithreaded 3d rendering engine...
