AMD Achieves Leading Market Share for Thin Clients (Recent Win With HP Adds to Market Momentum)

 

AMD announced that the company achieved a number one market share position for thin clients based on its thin-client shipments. According to its unit sales to thin client customers last year, AMD has more than half of that market, with 53 percent market share.¹

 

Thin clients, with little or no local storage, often serve as intelligent front-ends for server or cloud-based applications. Thin clients using AMD Embedded G-Series have a strong value proposition for immersive graphics in single- or multi-display configurations in the enterprise. Recent design wins with HP,Fujitsu and Samsung validate that AMD APUs provide compelling value with horsepower for data movement, encryption/decryption of central server data, and even video encode/decode for video conferencing or multimedia streaming.

AMD thin client solutions continue to gain market adoption because of the move to cloud-based computing. Increasingly, thin clients are also being used for more complex and high performance tasks. This is especially true for devices incorporating x86 CPUs and sophisticated graphics. The surge of innovation in the desktop virtualization market has created new opportunities for powerful thin clients that are now capable of executing demanding tasks including computer-aided design and 3D modeling. Customers are also using AMD thin client solutions in financial and government services, call centers, kiosks, and hospitals, "smart" monitors and other multi-user, virtualized installations.

The AMD G-Series SoC also features enhanced security for enterprise IT operations, enabling security between the thin client and the server, and allowing only software approved by an enterprise's IT organization to run on the thin client device. Wow. Amd as market share leader. Havent seen that in a while. Too bad its not gaming scene.

A shame tho... I'm really impressed with the (all around) performance of their APUs (for the price)...

I want to see them make a contender against the Shield Tablet... even if it's just a prototype...

It would be interesting if AMD could scale their K12 cores down and add their graphics IP based on the Arctic Islands also scaled down to create a SoC.

However, it's highly unlikely, actually more like impossible. AMD doesn't have the cash to even try such a venture nor do they have the cash to execute on it and try to breach the market for phones and tablets.

also considering the steamboy will have supposedly 2 gigs of dedicated memory along with 8 gigs of ram at that size is anyone else thinking there might be a g-series soc with hbm memory?

It's a good time for them to invest in this market, businesses and government bodies are constantly upgrading from their dated and insecure XP machines, as it stands I expect their market share in this market to increase further.

Not surprised. If being cheap is the only thing you are looking for, it is more likely that AMD will be the best option to go with. No real reason to have crazy performance if your just going to use it for cloud based operations. Still need AMD to compete at the high end CPUs.

Sure, you can land some designs wins, when you are paying OEMs to include your processor.

But in reality, it have been a fiasco, that Intel have been trying to cover over.

I do hope for Intel's sake that their upcoming Goldmont cores will be a significant improvement over Airmont cores because even the Airmont cores in a device such as Surface 3 are... Well, awful.

I don't understand how the Atom based processors are still so far removed from their Core based processors. I mean they've had years to bring Atom up to par but it's still far behind.

 

If Goldmont still fails to deliver, they should honestly just stop trying because in that case the ARM based products will still stomp on Intels offerings in the market.

Not entirely surprising. The profit margins aren't there for Intel to be interested, and ARM still can't keep up even with AMD's x86 designs in real world computing tasks. Good on AMD.

Why would you hate Thin Clients? The only reason I can think of is if you were imagining their use in a scenario where you should never use one.

 

Some companies do make that mistake though, trying to cheap out and use Thin Clients as desktop replacement workstations and the like. Definitely not the fault of Thin Clients though - that would be comparable to a company deciding to make all staff use Raspberry Pi's as their workstations.
