My suggestion is selling something- be it a software solution or something. For example, web developers make wordpress themes, frameworks, ect that they sell.

It's a bit hard to find what to sell, but it allows you to work at your own pace and potentially make more than client work.

Well you could ask the bank for a loan to make a "Video Game company" (that's what you tell them) and then just hire programmers, artists, game developers and such and be Indie devs and pump out games!

Works a lot of the time.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

Freelance Programing is not stable, as you cannot get any retainers (which means no stable income) unless you are under a contract.

I recommend finding some Programing Friends and make some nice multiplat software that people want to use

My best friend who lives in SF is a freelance, has been for years. He makes a great living, at the current moment isn't working on anything, just sitting on a big savings. It can be done if you have the skill/ connections and put your self out there and have a great portfolio. Good luck, I would shoot for higher then 10-12k..... How old are you may I ask?
