980Ti vs Titan X

So I currently have enough money to purchase a 980Ti, but I could easily wait about a month and have enough to purchase a Titan X. I would not be using the Titan for any sort of 3D animation or production, only for gaming. I would assume it would be a waste to buy a Titan X just for gaming, but I am not positive. Any suggestions would be appreciated  .

yeah, Titan X not worth unless you are certain you need the VRAM. go 980ti, if you have the cash in a month go SLI

980 Ti:

 

Pros: Faster clocks, better coolers

 

Cons: Much less VRAM, fewer CUDA cores and stream processors

 

Titan X: 

 

Pros: Much more VRAM, more CUDA cores and stream processors

 

Cons: Lower clocks, worse coolers. 

 

Conclusion: 980 Ti for gaming use, Titan X for workstation use.

you're perfectly right. In fact, the titan x is a waste for pretty much ANY use, since it's not particularly better at computing than a 980ti (unlike the titan black, which had more floating point processing units than the 780ti).

980ti and Titan x are the same card.

they're the same chip, but i think they slightly nerfed something on the die, forgot what exactly.

and yeah, you wont be needing more than 6GB vram.

 

one common misconception tho:

if you're getting a card for a VRAM intensive purpose, you dont need to use 12GB of VRAM to have the titan make sense over the 980ti, it starts to make sense as soon as your use case goes over 6GB. even if you'll never reach the full 12, as long as its over 6 its a choice to consider.
