Tech Gifts for Non-techies Giveaway!

My in-law's are very non-techsavvy, and when you were talking about the service calls over the phone for a remote control i felt like you were talking to me personally.

My in-law's call me all the time, typical conversation goes like this:

Mum in law:  I can't turn my DVD player on

me:               What remote control are you holding?

Mum in law:  my cable remote?

me:               thats the wrong remote control, you need to get the DVD player remote control

Mum in law:  but my cable remote has a "DVD" button on it? can't i just use that?

me:               no... there is a seperate remote control for your DVD player

Mum in Law: oh *laughs* what remote is the DVD player remote?

me:               you have an LG DVD player, right?

Mum in law:  Yes

me:               Can you find the remote control with the LG logo on it?

Mum in law:  ok, found it - but theres no eject, play, stop, or pause buttons on it

Me:               Have you picked up your TV remote control?

Mum In Law: I dont know! can you just come over?!

i then go over, and find the remote control that is placed ONTOP of the DVD player.  I then turn on the DVD player, and as i am getting ready to leave...

Mum in law: how do i change the input to DVD? i dont see an input button on this remote control

Me:              you're holding the DVD remote still

Mum in law: and?

Me:              you need to use the TV remote to change the input

Mum in law: oh i dont understand all of these remotes!!!

me:              no kidding!

so, if i was to get them something, it would be a universal remote, probably something like this one:

Thanks Linus, if you choose me you will be saving someones life i am sure!

If I could get one gift for my grandmother, it would be a logitch harmony ultimate for the living room.

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-915-000250-Ultimate-Entertainment-Automation/dp/B00N3RFFSO/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1449761292&sr=1-1&keywords=logitech+harmony+ultimate+white

Over the years, my grandmother has aquired a new smart TV that she has difficulties operating and at one point I pieced together a sound system on kijiji for her as she started having a hard time hearing the TV. I used to be around to help her operate things if she got confused, however I am now in school in the US and am no longer around to do tech support. That being said, most of the pieces of that system got disconnected due to my grandmother being overwhelmed with remotes. It would be nice to have a remote that I could program that would allow for the automation of a lot of the systems by way of multifunction buttons and simple programming. That way my grandmother could use the speakers again and not have to sit so close to the tv, or get frustrated when she cannot get the system to turn on etc.

There are a lot of options out there, but I think the best option would be to get my father a Moto 360. He really does love watches and I think he would really enjoy having a classy smart watch on his wrist...maybe he will actually be able to tell when his phone is ringing now. We are a family of small people, so the smaller 42mm watch is just fine.

Thanks Linus & Crew!

Happy holidays!

1) http://www.amazon.com/Intel-SERIES-2-5-Inch-Internal-SSDSC2BP240G4R5/dp/B00IF4NGEU/ ( Intel 730 SERIES 2.5-Inch 240 GB Internal Solid State Drive SSDSC2BP240G4R5 <RESELLER KIT>)

2)   We really tired of watching Windows 7 boot up slloooowwlly on an old HDD on one of our home computers (shared with my whole family, some of whom are not tech savvy and get extremely frustrated), plus that drive is slated to fail at at any moment. I know how to replace drive and transfer data and I know that SSDs are much faster than mechanical drives.

Hi,

I think the Nest Thermostat would be a great ida for my parents. They both don't like reprogramming their thermostat to save energy when the go out of town, something they do often. With the easy installation, that even I can do, and the simple gui and ease of use witha mobile smartphone I think this would be the perfect gift! Thanks LMG!

Here is the link to it.

- My Dad

- He can barely use his little netbook correctly to listen to music, watch some news, or look up the weather. I think something like this can make it easier for him to do so.

Hey Santa Linus!

My parents are in need of a Blu-ray player.  My sisters 3 kids and my 2 kids don't want to be bored on long visits to the grandparents house (don't tell my parents).  Solution:  PS4.  Amazon Link   My parents get the Blu-ray player they need, I can show them how to stream Amazon video, Netflix, YouTube, etc., they become super-cool in the eyes of the grandchildren.  Everyone wins!

Thanks Linus!

John

I'd give my mother a mechanical keyboard for at her office. She often complains about how old typing machines were better and how annoying it is to type on the keyboard she has now. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DGJALYW?refRID=XS6TNJDZN0W1AMD56GGW&ref_=pd_ybh_a_2 This would probably be typing heaven ;) but any full-size mech would do.

I also appreciate the fact that you keep organising such giveaways. Keep up the good work!

I'd get a Chromebook for my Mum

She's recently got back into nursing again and is studying at lectures, but her current laptop is seriously outdated and virus ridden. I'd like to get her this as she isn't very good with keeping computers virus free and with Chromebooks security, speed, and ease of use it would make life a lot easier for her. It'd also make it easier for me to stay in touch with her while I'm also at university.

Good luck everyone and thanks for putting this on Linus!

The gift is a Slingbox 500, and it would be for my Wife. She travels A LOT for business, often internationally. She has made mention before that when on the road, she would love to be able to watch content from the DVR, or even just local programming. None of the options from our cable provider offers quite what she is looking for. Slingbox would be the answer. Thanks!

I recommended a couple things to an elder lady that lives in my building

first was a chromebook: http://amzn.com/B00N3ODBBA

she was using an ancient laptop that I setup google drive on for all her documents, then convinced her the cloud was a better option for her since she could literally "throw her laptop in a river" and her files would be fine.

bonus ideas

another thing I recommended to her was a (at the time current gen, and only phone they carried) moto g 1st gen from republic wireless. she was on a pay by the minute dumb phone. The bill was REALLY cheap for a smartphone with unlimited talk/text that didn't use much data. (under $25 a month for her with flex data plan)

the setup of "ok google" for "help I fallen and can't get up" replaced one of those tag things old people wear around their neck. google keep has been a blessing for everything from medicine to shopping lists that ping from gps location when she is at the grocery store.

another thing was a netflix/chromecast/mohu leaf combo.  she was paying way too much for cable. I think the people here know enough for me not to explain.

(if I win, linus you can send me the amazon warehouse open box. saves you money and I ALWAYS buy those. NEVER had a problem with 50+ orders of things from it, and it saves you $)

A Corsiar 380t in yellow color, so I can put there some minion glasses, move whole sister system (except motherboard) and made a pants for it. She is only 10 years old and she got diabetes type 1. Is very hard to live with it (you can eat christmas cakes in small amount and at some time, because they are very carbohydrated. But we find some recepts and use diabeic flour and sugar so she can eat more). She likes minions very much so this will be something that she will love.

I would really like to give my dad a new headphone.
He has like a 5 dollar headphone right now and we can listen his music with him what is really annoying.
It would also boost his audio because he always wants to listen to music on a very high volume.
So with this present i want to give him something he wants but also something for me and my mother who don't have to listen to his music anymore :D
