So hear me out: most older folks aren't going to cancel their cable subscriptions. Sure, they'll use streaming services, but to enhance rather than to replace their sports/24-hour news needs. Remember TiVo? They just came out with this awesome product called the "BOLT." TiVo basically brought the DVR to most households, but I'd honestly forgotten about them in the last five years. And the thing is, to a younger person like myself, the BOLT is exactly four to five years too late. I've never had a cable subscription and probably never will. For my parents though, and I guess adults that have cable, this little box is the perfect melding of cable service and awesome streaming services. Let me sell you on this:

1. The remote control actually has a dedicated "skip commercial" button. No need to skip forward thirty seconds or do anything actually: you just hit a button and it goes right to the program. How badass is that? I mean the box actually presents you with a dialog box: skip commercials? Bet your sweet ass I do. This wizardry is made possible because TiVo has real people watching TV and segmenting the commercial bits. So damn cool.

2. You know how podcasting apps (and YouTube, actually) give you the option to speed stuff up a bit, like double time or 1.5x? This is actually a great way to get through long videos, like the WAN show, if crunched for time. The Bolt can do the same thing, but with TV! The setting is thirty percent faster than normal, with some fancy pitch control in the background to remove the squeaky effect. I really like the combination of commercial skip and this sped up deal. It allows more efficient consumption of some of the more lengthy sports (golf), but I bet my Dad would love it to get through the Sunday Morning shows we watch: "Meet the Press" and "Face the Nation."

3. Obviously the thing is the world's most badass DVR, letting you record up to four shows at once (even in 4k), and letting you stream those shows to any device on your network. I think extending the Living Room experience to the rest of the house is good use of that cable subscription. Mom could watch her show from last night on the kitchen tablet while making lunch, streamed from the TiVo.

4. Streaming services are straight up included in the box, so your parents won't have to mess with inputs. You'll just have to sign in to Hulu, Netflix, Spotify, etc... and they'll just have to turn on the TV to get it all going.

Did I mention that it can do all of that in glorious 4k?

Finally,

  • I think this little guy is arriving to the market a few years too late, but it is an excellent buy for my Mom and Dad, and really many families, because they haven't cut the cord and probably never will.
  • The Bolt lets a family like mine get the most use out of their expensive ass cable subscription, while also adding modern streaming services to their television with no fuss.

The TiVo BOLT 500GB Unified Entertainment System:

$299.00 (USD)

PS: How about a review of this bad boy, LMG? ;)

This christmas i would love to give a new phone to my grandparents, a friend of my mum because my grandparents use a old 2G nokia in there car, friend of my mum uses an 2g samsung e1081t phone, she can't afford much because of her health and she can not work at all anymore, things here are expensive compare to the USA(example a Moto E is $200 here but in the USA is only $10) and both them will stop working all together because Telstra and Optus are both turning off the 2G Network next year for ever and that is why i want to buy them both a Moto G 3rd Gen with 16gb storage and 2GB ram.

I live in Australia.

Here is the Link to both of them as well

Amazon USA link: http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Moto-3rd-Generation-Unlocked/dp/B00ZQVSKS2/ref=sr_1_3?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1449134745&sr=1-3&keywords=moto+G

I'd get my uncle some Jaybird X2s because he has been getting into mountain biking and I want to surprise him with some good headphones that won't get mangled and destroyed by biking.

I'd like to gift my flatmate a Moto G (http://www.amazon.de/Motorola-Generation-Smartphone-Touchscreen-Display-Speicher/dp/B011NUQN3I/) since he still uses his stone age Nokia.

It's quite frustrating to send him all messages seperatly because he doesn't have whatsapp or similar.

(This wouldn't be this big of a problem, but most people tend to forget that there's someone missing in the group to whom they have to text seperately.)

Sony 5.1 channel surround system

For my mum

The tiny stereo speakers on my mum's TV makes it hard to hear dialogue and details during movies. I've wanted to get her one for a while, but can't afford it right now. It's the one tech thing she'd really appreciate.

Ever since my mother got her 64GB iPhone 4s stolen last year( on with it contained all the photos of me and my brother) she could not fit all the photos she wanted on her new 16GB iPhone 5s (here replacement phone and because at the time we could not afford anything better than the small memory size) and because of that she is having to take less photos of use and is having to delete older photos to make room for the new ones even know she still wants to keep all those photos. And we can't really afford a bigger phone I thought about getting her a NAS that would be easy to use and would help her with this problem. She is very much not a tech savvy person and does not even own a computer ( or laptop) I thought getting this NAS would be great.

The NAS I thought of is the western digital personal network attached storage

Here is the link:

http://www.amazon.com/Cloud-Personal-Network-Attached-Storage/dp/B00EVVGAD0/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1449134941&sr=1-1&keywords=nas&refinements=p_n_feature_two_browse-bin%3A7817230011

Winning this for my mother would mean a lot for both her and me because we have gone though some rough stuff in the past year and I want to give here something nice for Christmas because she does so much for me.

With 300 dollars i would probably take a cleaning robot for my parents.

My mom has some lower back pain so a little help cleaning the house would be perfect.

Since they have mostly hard floors i chose http://www.amazon.com/iRobot-Braava-380t-Floor-Mopping/dp/B00DCCYD6U/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1449135502&sr=8-7&keywords=cleaning+robot

I know iRobot products are pretty reliable even for non tech savvy people so i think this would be a perfect gift!

Thanks LTT for the giveaway :)

I would get my family a HD projector/ motorised screen combo as they have just begun to enjoy the limited Netflix catalogue in Australia (Cri ivri tim) and this would definitely enhance their viewing. So my mom refuses to learn how to use touchscreens, she just says "she can only use something she can physically push", I'd like to get her a new smartphone so she doesn't have to use her old flipscreen Samsung phone anymore (that once fell into the toilet actually, still works, don't ask me how :o )

Something like this would be great: http://www.amazon.com/HTC-HTC6525LVW-One-M8/dp/B00K2VMWH6/ref=sr_1_6?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1449137091&sr=1-6&keywords=htc+one+m8&refinements=p_n_condition-type%3A6503240011"
Or a similar one, I don't know much about those.

Awesome idea for a giveaway guys btw. Whoever gets chosen, they're going to be so happy ^^

I would get my family (mom, dad, & sister) a Wii U. Our first console was the Wii early when it first came out. We played it for a few years and after moving it kind of just got forgotten about. Since then I've personally moved onto the Xbox 360, The One, and now onto PC Master race. It's been years since they've gotten to play games other than casual games on their phones (such as bejeweled or scrabble). It would be nice to own a console that had updated games that they could all enjoy in their living room.

Currently the Wii U Mario Cart bundle is running at US $299.99 linked here: http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-32GB-Mario-Pre-Installed-Deluxe-u/dp/B011XO54MA/ref=sr_1_3?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1449137275&sr=1-3&keywords=wii+u

With a gift like that from you guys I could also purchase extra game pads so our entire family could also battle in Mario Cart and eventually other games!
