Tips on haggling/bartering to get a better price?

I didn't really know where to put this topic, but I guess here will do for now?

 

So, to begin with, I'm going to be dropping around AUD $3000 on computer parts for my first build ever. Yes, I'm going all out. But I also don't want to buy everything at full price. Which is why I've made this post, so that the experienced buyers out there could share their knowledge on how to get the best deals when buying.

 

Here's a little bit more info:

 

- I'm in Adelaide, and I'll be buying the parts from IT Warehouse; a locally-owned company with less than 15 employees. I already know that they're willing to cut the price on big purchases, as I bought a laptop a few years back for $1500 and they cut the price by about 200 bucks.

 

- The total price of the components I want is $3,176 AUD on PC part picker (http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/KTmqt6) and I'd like to get the price down to less than $3000.

 

- I have this concept that, by spending more at a store, you're more likely to get a really good discount. Is this accurate?

 

Also, how do you deal with a bad sales rep? I've been in contact with a less-than-helpful sales guy before, and it was pretty clear that he isn't the kind to go around making deals to get customers.

 

Lastly, is it possible to haggle at ANY store, such as JB HI FI or Dick Smith or NCIX? Or is it only an option at smaller ones?

As far as haggling with NCIX, You're not going to be able to do it. I've tried, unless you're spending like 10K+, they don't have room to move, their price is already the lowest possible.

Oh that's okay. I was just using it as an example; we don't actually have NCIX in Aus. I think.

You can try to low ball people like Linus does in scrapyard wars, actually don't it just pisses off people.

Oh that's okay. I was just using it as an example; we don't actually have NCIX in Aus. I think.

Any store on new products will most likely not change their price for you unless you buy 10+ of an item and even then most won't just suck it up and pay the full cost of the thing.

Be nice to the sales guys, if they have KPis, for example selling you insurance or something, it can be a good way to strike a deal

 

For example I used to knock people money off if they took insurance, and they could just go ahead and cancel it , so its worth saying "yes" to some of the extras, as they will need help hitting their sales targets (since they are never just monetary based) sometimes they have targets for internet security and other things so dont be so quick to shoot these down!!!

 

Also, if the sales person is not nice, try and speak to a manager, they are the people that authorise discount, if you can plea with somebody senior, he will most likely authorise a low tier member of staff to apply discount, pending you  are taking the things they need to sell you

 

 

large stores are way less likely to have haggle room, as their prices are set by head office, and are not just made up in store, therefore they have to abide by company policy - CAN still be possible but a much harder fight

 

alternatively buy your parts online for the cheapest price

 

 

Since I was a salesman in a UK PC retail store for 7/8 years, most of my knowledge applies to this

Sometimes that is possible.

They usually cant give a straight discount, but they could include something like a longer warranty.. or a little accessory or something. 

 

But anyways, a tip on haggling I have is: pick a price that it's worth. pick a price what they will ask. pick a price you would like to get it for. After this you just think "Ok, I want to get it for 2900 AUD, the worth is 3100 AUD and they will also ask for 3100 AUD." after this you have to come up with a counter bid. For example they ask you for 3100 AUD, you offer 2700 AUD, they will say that's way not enough and say they can do for 3000 AUD and you counter offer that with 2900 and they will probably counter that with 2950.

That is kinda what usually happens, so keep that in mind. Other than that, just know what the prices at other places will be so you can compare and show/tell them at the store you will be buying

The problem I have with this is that the shipping cost can be a total b*tch. I haven't eliminated that as a buying option, though.

I'm not really sure that's a good idea... it isn't ideal to be waltzing around with over $3000 dollars in cash, even if it's in a safe country.

This is pretty good, but that's never how haggling works if you say that low price to some people. That will not counter offer. So you have to say slightly lower then what you want to pay and if they counter offer more then say that you really only can pay that first amount.

The Scrapyard Wars is totally different.  Those are used parts that are old that people are selling high, you can always ask to come down on a price on place like Craigslist.  But as far as new parts go, you're not going to get anywhere since its the manufacturers that set the price.  This isn't like going out and buying a care or a house and even at places like a P.C. Richards the sales staff don't work on commissions anymore.
