how to reactivate windows after major upgrades

theroflcopta
Go to solution Solved by ooiman92,

If you see the blue screen right before windows loads up it could be an issue with AHCI being enabled/disabled.

Okay I basically replaced every component in my PC save the hard drive with my windows on it. I've never done this before so what processes must I complete to get it in working order?

I'm pretty sure you would need to call microsoft and tell them that you migrated to a new system. I could be wrong.

OEM system builder editions are locked to the hardware so you will have to buy another copy or as ooiman said try calling microsoft (They aren't supposed to give you a new key theoretically but I've heard of them giving them out anyway and deactivating the old key)

If your windows is an OEM copy of it, you will have to contact microsoft, OEM windows will only work on the first hardware it was installed on.

Okay now that I think about it what I was looking for is kinda a step by step of what i need to do to get the the code activation screen, Any time I try to launch windows it blue screens, even after the install disk for my copy said to start windows normally it still crashed. So I'm not really sure what to do cause I have never actually had to install windows so I don't really know the blow by blow. So i'm using the MSI G45 so if you are familiar with that BIOS any instructions will be appreciated. so I just need to get to the activation screen is basically my plight and i'm not entirely sure how to do it.

Thanks guys!!!

OEM versions allow all hardware upgrades except for an upgrade to a different model motherboard. Best thing to do is just call Microsoft and get a new number. I've never had it not work.

Welll, you can call them and tell them you're having issues activating windows, but never tell them it's OEM. (I never said anything lol :P)

I don't think they really care. If they did, they would have a system set up where your OEM key wouldn't ever activate again on different hardware.

Well yeah, I guess but I'd like to not reveal information just in case. They should be easy enough to deal with though.
