ParanoidAndroid is dead, thanks Oneplus

This is over a month old but it hasn't been mentioned here I believe.

 

The team's last release in July 2015 were the custom Android 5.1 Lollipop ROMs for Nexus devices. A lot of people commented on the delay for the release, which was odd for the team since their previous releases were almost always prompt.

Nonetheless, the delayed releases were special cases due to some of the team members' and Aaron Gasciogne's publicized commitment to the development of the OxygenOS ROM, which comes installed in OnePlus devices when they get shipped out. However, a recent post by Andre Saddler, a Paranoid Android developer, sheds light on how dire a predicament the team is at the moment.

"ParanoidAndroid is dead," said Saddler. "Ever since [the] OnePlus hiring it's been done."

Saddler noted that users and companies' hiring of core team members kills custom ROMs. He adds that he was demotivated due to the lack of communication and discontinued interest on the Paranoid Android project by the core members that got hired by OnePlus.

Even with Saddler's post, some remain hopeful. Another Paranoid Android member, Matt Flaming, who deals with infrastructure and public relations, commented on the subject.

"I cannot say officially that we are indeed dead, as I would love to see where 2016 brings us," Flaming told Android Authority. "I would love to wind down 2015 not worrying about it, and hopefully 'get the band back together' early next year."

The team's public relations officer is hopeful that Paranoid Android will be reignited next year.

i wonder if im the only one

 

since i bought a nexus 5 my flashing days are over

i just root it and that pretty much it

 

but when i owned and S2 and a OneS and used to flash like crazy at least once a month !

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

but when i owned and S2 and a OneS and used to flash like crazy at least once a month !

The need/necessity for custom ROMs is becoming less and less apparent with each iteration of Android, because they're starting to integrate more features in stock firmware that you could only find in custom ROMs. Also with each iteration fo Android, Google is making root harder. Another problem is that most ROMs can't keep up with material design language. New problems are coming with the addition of fingerprint scaners and the deeper implementation of Google Now ...

Things aren't looking good for the modding community, which is a shame. A Galaxy or LG phone without a custom ROM is basically unusable IMHO. Also the modding community has always been important for the maintenance of older devices with custom ROMs bringing the latest Android updates to phones who are no longer officially supported. It's sad to see all the devs becoming unmotivated.

I never felt that ROM's have anything worth while anymore anyways. But Kernels are something i'd like to see around in the future because those are the fun little things i like to play with now.

You also have to remember the android community is a really small part of the whole userbase. Also hiring people who they know are capable and tested working together is a good business practice. Plus if those devs wanted to keep PA going, they would atleast make sure there are people to succeed them. Dont blame it on a company. They decided to completly ditch the project. OP just invited them in.

That's an issue of the devs, not of Oneplus. Look I fucking hate Oneplus as a company: their stupid vaporware is mostly promises and bullshit invite systems. But in this case you really can't hold a business to such incredibly high standards: people will go to where they're paid and/or valued the most. Open source projects are usually a past time and the community should be happy people are finding success because that will mean others will be encouraged to try to join in.

 

This is akin to getting angry at say, Valve, for hiring a bunch of people from modding communities. Only a selfish prick would say "But what about my free mods? Who's gonna make em now?"

When I had my first Android phone aka the Samsung Galaxy S, then I was a "flashoholic" & could sometimes flash a ROM 3 times a day... But now, with my 6th Android device (HTC One M7) I stopped being a flashoholic. I got "too mature" for it [emoji1]

so a custom rom isnt getting made because the devs joined a company to make roms for them where they can implement many of there ideas and get paid.

man,for a galaxy s3 it would make sense but for recent flagships,especially korean like lg/samsung(which packs a hell lot of features) it would not.basically half of the phone is lost. a costum rom would kill the camera quality,wich is why most conumers buys a galaxy phone.no more dual-window,ir-blaster etc etc.plus you lose the stock rom stability.

 

also how on earth a dev can be motivated when all the free work you've done is stolen by...cyanogen inc for their commercial rom cyanogenOS?
