Does the GTX 970 3.5GB memory problem actually affect gaming?

Yes it does. This is why I went with a GTX980ti. I use all 6gb when playing GTA V so to all the people saying you won't need more then 4gb, they are liars

I was just wondering if any 970 owners know if it makes a difference at all, because alot of websites only tell you the speed of the last 500MB and how its slow. But don't tell you if it affects gaming, so does it?

I have a gtx 970 Strix from asus and personally havent realized any difference when playing games like GTA5 and AC.

Only in games that use over 3.5GB of VRAM (GTA V, Shadow of Mordor, etc).

 

Get a 390 instead. 8GB of VRAM in all of it's glory.

The R9 390 can't use 8GB's of VRAM.

how come the 970 doesn't drop in price a little because the r9 390 is the better choice at the same exact price almost

Yes it does. This is why I went with a GTX980ti. I use all 6gb when playing GTA V so to all the people saying you won't need more then 4gb, they are liars

 

Unless you're playing at a resolution higher than 1080p, there's no way in hell you're using 6gb of VRAM in GTA. Pics please.

Frame scaling set to 5/1 or DSR set to 4k. I guess it isn't 1080 but a GTX970 could handle 1440

i'm gaming at 1440p on a single GTX 780 3GB graphics card and have NO ISSUES what so ever in ANY game i've played so far and i played most of them. (GTA5, witcher 3, Farcry4, shadow of mordor, wolfeistein new order, dying light, arkham knight... name it...) no reason a 970 would struggle with any games especialy if you game at 1080p.

 

Many games have my VRAM completely capped at 3072mb but it won't change anything the games won't stutter or anything...games sometimes will fill the memory if it's there, but if you have 2 or 3GB they will fill that and call it a day and in most cases it won't change anything.

Then why didn't you add that part in to your post? OP asked in general, and in general the 970 won't have any issues since most people aren't on 4k displays.

Even at 1080 I hit 4gb and having the last 3.5gb be super slow would be killer in GTA V

K well it's going to use over 3.5GB, so if you SLI 970s, you're basically screwed.

 

 

 

I don't even use it, I don't see why AMD even implemented it, OBS is way better. Shadowplay sucks too.

Then why didn't you add that part in to your post? OP asked in general, and in general the 970 won't have any issues since most people aren't on 4k displays.

exactly, has i said in my previous post that moved very quickly i game at 1440p on a 3GB card and have no issues what so ever, some games do fill all my VRAM and then that's it...it won't change anything...some games just love to fill more vram if it's there but if it's not there they will deal with it otherwise.
