x99 vs z170 question.

So, I'm finalizing my build... but one thing has been nagging me...

I have a parts list for an x99 build with 4x8Gb DDR4 and a 5930k

and a parts list for a z170 build with 2x8Gb DDR4 and a 6700k....

which should i go with?  :wacko:

 

**EDIT** I will be adding another set of 2x8Gb DDR4 to the z170 build, was more or less trying to emphasize the difference between quad and dual channel and which would perform better

(This rig will be for current gen gaming and 1080p/4k video rendering.)

How much video rendering, if a lot or a decent amout go x99 as the gaming difference is small while the render difference is large, also 5820k is a better buy.

5820k is better than the 6700k and it's better than the 5930k in terms of price/performance.

I'd take the 5820k over the 6700k. Quadchannel-RAM (although not that big of a deal) and 2 more cores and more PCIe lanes.

You probably won't need the 40 lanes the 5930k has to offer.

I vote first list for all dem cores (5820k, do you REALLY need the 40 lanes the 5930k has?)

I am going through this myself right now, I have been looking into the performance differences in games. The key source for me has been gamegpu.ru, one of the few sites that tests a lot of different CPUs and GPUs against all the games that come out. They unfortunately don't have a 6700k in their benchmarks but the 6core verses 4 core haswell is an interesting comparison for showing just how often games use more than 4c8t CPUs. The answer from the front pages is they pretty much all do unless there is a problem, either the cache/memory bandwidth or cores is making the Haswell-E outperform the Haswell by some margin.

 

Which leaves me with the same problem. On the one hand I know that in some games Skylake is going to be better, but I can see a lot of games showing benefits in 6 cores, but its such an old architecture and at the time it came out I decided it wasn't a big enough leap. But then pcper.com did their video about Skylake v Sandy Bridge and convinced me I needed to change my machine. Considering I do render video and I program professionally its actually a stupidly hard choice and one I really don't want to defer but fear I really ought to until Broadwell-E comes out just to get a little more out of the X99 platform.

Had a similar dilemma.   A month or two ago.  I ended up going with a 5820K.   When clocked the same you are looking at a marginal difference in gaming.  However in productivity you gain a lot from the quad channel memory and the extra 2 cores.  

 

And in the future if you need even more power you can upgrade to a 5960X.   6700K is as high as Z170 goes.
