Box Box Box - Sim Racing Players Club [Now Hype Train Enabled!]

Due for 2017 refresh.

As you can probably tell from the title, this thread is being presented as an extension of The Garage, an area of the Linus Tech Tips forums where automotive enthusiasts can come together and speak words that express their amazement for the physical world, regardless of whether it has four wheels or not. Full credit to @techswede and everybody else in that thread for their thriving success (1,200+ pages!) and may it continue for many years to come. Also, while LTT does already have an existing Gaming Screenshots thread, it is much too cluttered for the purposes I’m proposing here, and it would be impractical to start new threads for videos. Hat tip to the members in either sub-community on their work and showing that there is a place on this forum for such media.

I am hereby formally inviting all members of the Linus Tech Tips forum to continue sharing their admiration for car culture of the digital kind.

Despite the two titles listed as the main focus of this thread, I will keep it open to any racing titles produced for either the PC or console platforms, be they arcade, simulator, or a hybrid of the two. Exceptions include, but are not limited to, motorcycle & ATV titles and any of the simulation experiences produced by Dovetail Games. Content presented as either moving or still pictures must adhere to the LTTF Code of Conduct; as for moderation, I will be keeping it to a minimum but will intervene as I see fit.

1504945538733936166.jpg

Without further ado, let’s get some administrative things out of the way!

GENERAL GUIDELINES

I don’t actively race, can I still participate?

Absolutely! Much like club-racing in real life, I want to keep this thread as open as possible so we have plenty of room to grow. Whether you just want to drop by and check things out, are an actively contributing member, or are on the fence about purchasing a particular game, just leave a post and somebody will reply ASAP! We’re all super friendly and we (read: most of us) won’t bite.

What games are eligible for sharing here?

Preferably I’d like to keep it focused on the aforementioned games and exceptions, but I will be open to any game released after 2000. Examples include, but are not limited to: any CodeMasters game, any Need for Speed game, Driveclub, The Crew, rFactor, iRacing, GranTurismo, Forza Motorsports & Horizons, Mario Kart / Sonic All-Stars, and of course indie games (BeamNG Drive, Absolute Drift, Automatio, etc), just to name a few.

How do we capture content?

This is entirely up to the user and no one program is specified for the purposes of consistency. Software is open as far as I’m concerned, but I’ll leave you with this: Use whatever you like, but use it often and learn the absolute snot out of it. Examples: FRAPS, DXTory, Bandicam, OBS, XSplit, NVidia ShadowPlay, AMD Raptr, Steam (or any third-party) screenshots, etc.

Where to host images & videos?

Again, there are no restrictions as to where you can host your content, so long as the media adheres to the guidelines of the respective host and breaks none of the rules set by the developers; it is the responsibility of the user to make sure that these requests are met.

>> Preferred video hosts: YouTube, DailyMotion, Twitch

>> Preferred image hosts: imgr, PhotoBucket, Kinja, FaceBook, direct-attach (personal websites to be approved on a case-by-case basis)

As for editing software, the easiest (relatively speaking) suites, in no particular order, are Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere, Lightworks (FREE!!) and Apple iMovie if you're in that camp. Export settings are entirely up to the user, preferrably one of the following: 720p30, 720p60, 1080p30, 1080p60, 1440p30, 4K.

Driving tips & set-up help?

This of course varies from game to game, and car to car, so if you have any questions feel free to post below with your car, current set-up, and whatever track(s) you’re having issues with. Alternatively you can seek help at the respective community forums for that specific game. As for driving tips and how to go faster / decrease lap times, I have listed a very useful resource whose tips also apply to real-life driving. That being said, you won’t learn anything unless you get out there (read: in game) and practice yourself, so find some time and invest in your skills!

Driving etiquette in online multi-player?

While not a full-on non-contact simulation level community, I am going to state a zero-tolerance policy for rammers and people who enter our lobbies with the intention of trolling. That being said, the occasional racing incident will go by with no further actions required. Bottom line: racing clean is ideal, but a bit of bumping and drafting every now and then keeps things interesting.

Set-up tours?

Similar to the Show Off Your Setup (est. 2013); not a mandatory part of membership, but I acknowledge the work people put into their set-ups, be it with or without a wheel. Any photos or videos are entirely up to the user’s discretion.

1457865361830173989.jpg

Custom vehicle liveries?

Not applicable to every title, but where it is: liveries must adhere to the community guidelines regarding mature content and presentation of digital logos or brands. For games where custom liveries are not available in online gameplay (Assetto Corsa, Project CARS), users must select a livery that is shipped default with the game. If users intend to use custom liveries in their single-player endeavors, then there is no restriction; otherwise, liveries must be submitted to me for approval (via DM on LTTF) prior to an event, and I must be notified of any changes.

Downloadable content (DLC) and modding:

Both the Assetto Corsa and Project CARS communities are synonymous with having extra content available, be it paid or otherwise. In any case, credit must be given to wherever users obtain the mods from and if it is obtained commercially, it must be stated in the description of any videos. DLC that is provided by the developer (Kunos Simulazioni, Slightly Mad Studios) is subject to exceptions; bottom line is that redistribution is prohibited.

Unofficial LTT leagues?  :D

As of now, there are no current plans for hosting any form of points-based league races, and we are all content with casual one-off events. This may change as there is more interest in this sub-community.

>>> Note: there will never be any physical nor monetary prizes awarded, should a league ever come into fruition.

Interacting with other members:

As with in the Garage, I am requesting that if you quote a previous post that you either hide all photos in a spoiler or delete all non-applicable photos from your reply. This is in the interest of those who have slow internet connections, or low bandwidth, and just makes interacting with one-another a smoother experience.

Again, a reminder that this is an open invite to anybody playing on a PC or any console.

See you all out on track!

Yeah. All you have to do is select all -> automatic font color to fix it. :) Usually a C/P from Word just requires right clicking the text box and hitting "paste as plain text" to get it without errors.

LOL @ that video @brownninja97

Today in pCars I had a league race. I came in first in my division :D

Although it was only because the guy who normally comes first had a terrible crash and had to pit lol

But after 26, hard fought laps I'm very happy

That rear end is spot on accurate with the car I saw in February! Can't wait to see it in anger! Hope Ford brings it to the Canadian auto show next year after the Roar (Mazda brought their SkyActiv lola in 2014). Never knew about the VLN car either; pretty sure they use the GT3 spec as well, although the AMG GT3 looks much angrier..

Makes sense why you were playing so much Assetto Corsa lately LOL. Never heard of Team BB but will definitely check them out after this! Been playing a lot of third party mods in AC (~20 cars, 60 tracks) with some from Virtua Simulazioni and UnitedRaceDepartment. Hope you all get some form of monetary compensation for your work, and that its not as ridiculously priced as URDs stuff (although tbh, it didnt cost that much.

Edit: actually, I vaguely remember a Super GT mod for AC. Would Team BB happen to be working on that? I can't recall if it was released or not, and if it was I can't find it now. :/

If SMS has shown that they can do this for a DTM car, I can't wait to see how they would handle a similar Super GT car!

Maybe look at the grip coefficients and power? Sound-wise, how does it compare?

mostly focusing on the model right now, while we have a generally idea of how it will perform, the aero makes it look like it will be heavily balanced for corners instead of straight line speed. the aero can almost guarantee ford getting an engine bottleneck as well. AI is interesting, its on pace with GTE now only beaten by the Darche which is realistic but in the hands of me its still 2 seconds off the egt Bayro(the slowest egt) in hotlapping around Imola, spa and Brands Hatch. Once we get some proper race data we will do the physics properly well at least attempt to.

I know this is late, but still technically an ICYMI kind of thing.

As of September 8, 2015, Slightly Mad Studious (SMS) announced that Project CARS is now an official eSport platform, and following the successful public tests at Gamescom was pleased to announce that the first competitive tournament would take place at the EuroGamer Expo in Birmingham, England. After a weekend of daily tournaments, YouTuber Matt York (Yorkie065) as a guest commentator, and an attendance of 75,000 strong, SMS have now made available video recaps from each day of competition, for your own enjoyment (if you didn't follow live on Twitch). The format was to take the top four time trial competitors for that day, and subject them to five races in random cars on random tracks to see who would come out on top; to say people were interested would be an understatement, as the event attracted everyone from your average joes to members from TSA Racing, one of the top sim racing teams in rFactor. Below are videos of each day's finals, although full recaps for each day are also available on SMS' YouTube channel.

On top of the EGX tournament, SMS have also announced the Go4 Cup - the successor to the ESL Kick-Off Cup events, aimed at promoting the competitive side of the game. The main difference this time is that there are actual cash prizes on the line, with weekly and monthly payouts for the top players. Entry is completely free, and all you have to do on your end is sign up and confirm your availability on the dates of the tournament. Sign up instructions are as follows:

Step 1: Register for a free account at the ESL website.

Step 2: Select your platform (PC/PS4,XB1) - this is also where you would enter your in-game name (IGN)

Step 3: Check in - this is where you select your competition dates

Step 4: Play your match! Add your opponent, set-up the lobby, and duel it out! Afterwards, confirm the results on the ESL end or report a dispute.

I have added this post under the stickied threads portion of the first post, as well as updated the useful resources.

Been enjoying a lot of PCars lately. Here are recent screens...

Tri-podding a Porsche while sliding in the rain on turn one at Brands Hatch. :)

rK5ACpm.jpg

The rest of these images are from doing a series of races with the infamous Lotus 98T - one of my favorite race cars of all time. :) With the AI difficulty cranked up, it requires SO MUCH concentration and it's such a non-stop fight with the wheel to be truly fast in this car (with no assists) that I'm literally sweating buckets by the end of even just a qualifying session. lol. Then, if I manage to qualify at the front of the pack (usually can) the next big challenge is executing a clean launch and getaway off the start. A few times this went horribly wrong as my car uncontrollably careened into the wall. You know when you end up upside down and you can see your own wheel sitting on the track some distance away, it wasn't a good start. :P

It's hard enough to keep these cars tame on your own, let alone in a pack. Well, when I crested a hill at Circuit Zolder and one of the AI decided to nudge me when traction was all but scarce - the following two images is what resulted:

The rest of these are just some nice pics of the mighty 98T. Enjoy. :)

Oh and one more thing... If you don't think these cars are that much of a handful, the calluses on my hands say otherwise. ;) Very few other cars force me to hold the wheel this tight. It's a constant battle keeping these suckers going straight and I love every second of it! :D

The RUFs do like to lift a wheel, I can vouch for that. The 98T still doesn't agree with me, but oh man the John Player liveries look SO GOOD. The AI in PCARS does put up some pretty enjoyable battling, but when they mess up it's pretty hilarious to watch (and then your car randomly clips a corner at 250 kph and sends it doing barrel rolls, but that's a story for another day). Still trying to fine tune settings with the Freesync monitor so I can run at decent quality with a good sized AI field. FX8350 has a tough time running a 16 car race with OBS doing a high bit rate local recording LOL.

Currently recording a bunch of stuff in AC and PCARs regarding DLC content, and I've updated the first post accordingly. Will post video links (once I get around to editing them, because university bleh) and keep y'all updated. Hopefully I can still find time to play with y'all lol.

Also, even though it's a suede wheel, I might look into getting some gloves to keep the material in good condition, and you know, calluses.

Both Leo Bodnar and NaturalPoint have issued me tracking numbers for my SLI-Pro and TrackIR 5 respectively. DSD have also confirmed my order for everything I need to put my Nardi wheel onto my G27, including a custom mini plate to retain my buttons. Was it worth paying a single course worths tuition for the G27 upgrades? I dunno, guess we'll have to wait until November to find out. :)

With the announcement from Mitsubishi earlier today, I feel it would be appropriate to take the FQ400 for a spin in Project CARS tonight, or sometime this week. Just throwing it out there - but I'd totally be down. :)

i feel your pain, a couple of my friends got a 935 K3 moby dick into Assetto corsa and as with all drm cars its a nightmare to control, dreading every corner doing manuovers with my feet that i didnt think were possible all with four gears. Then go back to driving a GT3 car with my pinkies.

It's only 2 laps!? That's kinda... lame. Needs to be at least 10+ depending on the track. A big part of racing is endurance and consistency. Anyone can get lucky in 2 laps if there's an incident, where as those with real skill that can be fast over a longer period of time deserve the real win if they so earn it. ;)

no clue, no mention of qualifying either, its a lucky toss up, just hope you are first and dont cock up at T1 like someone is likely to do. Races should be 30 minutes minimum.

Here is a good example of how it should be.

Length is a bit of a grey area right now. The format for the EGX show was a full morning/afternoons worth of time trials to seed out the fastest drivers for each day, then invite them back for a series of short races to determine a winner for that day, and thats it. Hell, even for the ESL Go4 Cup its just 4 laps but when you consider that this is a weekly event, at a certain time, for a global yet open entry list - that is logistically the fastest way to do it, regardless of how many people enter the ladder. Yes it takes ages to verify results, but you can see that SMS has accounted for this, somewhat, by providing provisions in the ladder system regarding lobby setup.

Edit: no qualifying, which sucks, and the ladder system doens't guarantee that the fastest guys actually get to race but when you consider that there isn't an entry fee, you aren't really losing out on much other than time - as long as you have fun along the way, is the general approach to things.

1461007230301454117.png

Note: RO = Round Of, and you don't necessarily work your way through the entire thing - variable based on weekly entrants. Would be fun for us in LTT to race according to this ladder, though.

Gimicky yes, but whether you like it or not the ESL agreement is a big step for Project CARS. If you want longer, more competitive racing then you would sign up for your own leagues, whether it be with groups such as The Gentlemen's Club or otherwise. At the end of the day, the community has recognized the need for long, competitive yet friendly racing and if you look, you're sure to find something to facilitate your needs. I'm currently racing with the PCARS Friends group, when I have time as their calendar conflicts with a lot of school stuff. Below is what the typical TGC race looks like, for the more experienced players.

TGC has been around since the early beta builds of the game, hence why they're one of the names that gets tossed around frequently. As of late, they've become well versed in multi-class racing be it LMP1/LMP2/GT3 or GT3/GT4, etc.

2 laps is gimp, 15-20 is where I've found a lot of fun because royally screwing up can set you back pretty bad and it's hard to regain the ground you lost even with that many laps. Plus it really tests you concentration for going that many times around a track without messing up.
