Finally actually folding! But need help

So my setup is i5 2500, gtx 460 and gtx 275. The 460 and CPU seem to be doing fine, but the GTX 275 is showing what work unit it is working on, but it doesn't show the base points, estimated credit, estimated PPD or any of that. And it completes WU in no time, as I have typed this, it has probably completed 8-10% of its WU (PRCG 5769 (14,307,4231) ).

 

Does this mean its working fine? The GPU is pegged at 99% and is definitely putting out a lot of heat. 

 

Also, with my CPU at 3 cores and both GPU's going, F@H is only expecting about 22k PPD. Does this seam right?

Yes, that sounds about right. The older GPU's dont display any of that stuff, so as long as the progress bar is moving dont worry about it. My GTX260 didnt display its ETA, PPD, TPF, ect.

 

You will also be getting a little more then that 22k PPD if its running 24/7. Keep an eye on your stats in http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/

One more question, is there a way to make it so one of the two GPU's are always folding? I need my GTX 460 to stop folding when I want to watch videos and movies, but my 275 can keep going 24/7 and it would never interfere with anything. Is there a way to do this?

You can right click and pause a slot in the advanced control client (folding slot, not work queue).

GPU folding, when not in core17 for me made my pc soooo laggy that it was out of the question to do GPU folding while i was using the pc.

Well you can't make it, but add the flag :client-type advanced and the you might get one after you finish your current WU. It doesn't cause low ppd but on the contrary from what I've seen!

Yep - I also have lag sometimes watching hi def videos and need to pause my main GPU. Also, as Theo pointed out, add that flag to your GPU slots. Will make your client availble to download test WU's which typically yeild a lot more PPD.

Last night I stopped my GTX 275 from folding because it is way to loud to be in in y HTPC, and I noticed my PPD in the advanced view client shoot up about 10k without it running. When I started the 275 again to check what was happening, my GTX 460 which is running core17 dropped from an estimated 20k ppd to about 11k ppd. Why would that happen? I am thinking about throwing the 275 on an older machine anyways where it will be running by itself, but I am still pretty confused why this would happen.

Cards dont like running together for a bunch of different reasons. The main two being 1: Bottleneck at CPU and 2: Heat (especially on that Tesla and Fermi)

 

Run the two together for a few days, check your stats on http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com

Run only the 460 for a few days, check your stats again. Maybe the old card is making up for the points your losing from running the two together.

 

Also keep in mind that advanced view wont show you any PPD, TPF, ect for the older cards, so your getting more PPD then it says.

Ya, I found with multiple GPU's without Excellent cooling and airflow, heat was a major issue and things started throttling...

Could be heat. The 460 runs cool, like mid 60's, but the 275 got up to 85+, even though my case has pretty great cooling. That 275 just runs hot! I am putting it on an old core 2 duo rig anyways and I will put it out in the garage. The stock 275 cooler is just way to loud, can't stand it at all. With almost full fan, it was over 80c, anything less and it was to hot.

Wow, cooling could have been part of it. Moved the 275 to the other rig, folding with 60% fan with only about 60-65c. Its also an open air bench... but still, impressive temp drop

Excellent - if your 460 is like mine, the fan is in the middle - which sucks for trying to draw cool air when folding with multiple GPU's crunched together...

It is, but the 460 was on the bottom so it had plenty of ventilation. The GTX 275 had an open PCI slot between it and the 460, but I guess it was still having issues getting clean air. Its running MUCH cooler on the open bench.

 

Thanks for the help guys! I should be getting something like 30k ppd ish between i5 (only on 2 cores for now, hyper 212 on the way to help this) GTX 460 and 275.
