CPU upgrade for socket 1156?

My brother prebuildt pc is not 3-4 years.

 

 

The 2 things i think is a problem in his computer is his CPU and Gpu

 

He have a:

 

intel core i3 540

 

and a

 

Radeon Hd5550( i dont know how many gb, i think its 1).

 

He is lagging in all new games att lowest settings.

 

I am asking do he need a CPU upgrade from that CPU,

 

He will buy himself a new GPu i recommended him a GTX 770,

 

Can a i3 540 handle a Gtx 770?

 

if no, what CPU upgrade can he get for 1156?

I'ld look at bumping him up to either an FX line CPU (6300 or up are awesome) or an i5 as well as a new GPU. Both the CPU and GPU he currently has just won't cut it in new games.

 he just bought fallout 3, he cant play, computer laggs like hell

Buy a new PC, if you don't upgrade the CPU it will bottleneck a 770.

You're system is pretty outdated, I think you should look into getting an entirely new system. It's getting to the stage where you need to upgrade everything.

A i3 540 isn't too shabby, but only a Dualcore. I would get a GTX 660 non TI or a 7870. A GTX770 is to much for a dualcore.

 

Look if you can get a cheap quadcore for your socket on ebay I5-760/i7-870, if you can you could go for a GTX770

Try searching for a used 750 or maybe even a 875K. And assuming he's running 1080p he should get something like a 760 or 660Ti.
