New here, need help choosing a processor for graphics design. Thanks in advance ;)

Hi all,

I am pretty new here and I hope you can help me.

I am a graphics designer and I am looking to upgrade my system.

I use programs like Maya, Photoshop, Mudbox and 3Ds Max and my current rig is struggling with all of them.

My current rig is:

CPU: Intel i5 3450

RAM: 16GB DDR3 Corsair Vengeance LP

MOBO: MSI Z77A-G43

GPU1: Palit GTX770 Jetstream 2GB

GPU2: AMD HD6540

SSD: Samsung 840EVO

Monitors:

1x 27" @1920 x 1080

2x 20" @1680 x 1050

1x 17" @1280 x 1024

I have been looking at three available options for me and I can't chose between the pro's and cons on each.

And I do not want to overclock because the system must be built for maximum stability.

1: Intel Core i7 4770

The nice things about this one is that it has the newest intel architecture and the lowest TDP and idle consumption.

Nothing really wrong about it but it lacks a few things the other options do have.

2: Intel Core i7 3820

I really like the fact that most 2011 motherboards have 8 Ram slots which gives me the chance to upgrade to 32 gigs without

having to get rid of my current ram first.

What I don't like is the price of the CPU and especially the price of the motherboards (over 150 euro's in the Netherlands where I live)

3: AMD FX 8350

Now I am not a huge fan of AMD. I've had multiple amd processors DOA so I'm not sure about this one.

But the price is VERY low compared to the others and the prices of the motherboards are also low.

I am not sure about how this processor with it's 8 cores compares to the 4 core hyper threaded i7's

( need the most advice on this one :P)

So yean, I hope you guys can help me with this because I am really torn!

Cheers

Icradin

I would go for an Ivy Bridge CPU personally, therefore you don't have to upgrade your motherboard. Go for the 3770K and welcome to the forum!

Thanks a lot guys! I might go for the 3770, but the price difference with the 4770 is not that big and the 4770 does score a lot better.

Question about the Ivy-E processors, when are they available and are there specs online? I follow graphics card progression tot he letter but I don't know anything about processors :P

3770K would be your best bet, then you wouldn't have to buy anything else at all. Any other options involve buying a new motherboard also so I would stick with you current Ivy Bridge platform. As for Ivy-E, there a rumours around but nothing concrete yet.
