Welcome to the forums!

Well you could but itll be slow and stuff, specially if its USB2, if its USB3 itll be better but still wont compete with SATA2/3 for the random writes/reads i think.

You should better; either remove things and free up space, or just get a new internal hdd

Why not add an internal harddrive? Cheaper and faster ;)

USB 3 is 5gigabits/sec and Sata 3 is 6 gigabytes per second. A HDD wont saturated any of those, at all.

Yes for large files itll be fine, but random reads/writes will be slower on USB3 cause of added latency

If your just putting games on it, the worst that can happen is you have to wait like 5 extra seconds on the loading screens.

Get an internal drive it's faster. Though don't worry about the HDD saturating the bandwidth on USB 3. Hard drives aren't that fast.

Yes thats generally true, but if the game is like Fallout New Vegas and you have a big texture pack you ll get terrible stuttering, so if the game loads textures or other things while youre playing, you ll get stuttering with usb3

I've never had that problem and I've played Crysis 3 @ 1440p with 16xAA using 4xMSAA. While running it off a external HDD.

What do you mean for gaming? Because I would never run a game of an external if it could at all be avoided.

buy a USB 3.0 (USB SuperSpeed or USB SS) Hard Drive with a decent brand name like seagate or WD(Western Digital) and it will be fine for your basic gaming purposes.

So internal or external?

You always have the option of buying a bare drive or your choice and buying a external enclosure of your choice and putting the two together.

I would not recommend running games from an external hard drive, an SSD is ideal but you could use something like a western digital black drive internally for a compromise in price.

Accidentally pooped my pants in the elevator.

I'm taking this shit to a whole new level.

so you want the external drive to be powered of the laptop or can it have a AC adapter?

also are you willing to build your own? the reason I bring this up is very few prebuilt drives have 7200rpm drives

I want it to be powered by laptop perferably compactible with 2.0 since i maybe giving game setups to friends.

I didnt know 7200 rpm external HDD without power adaptor are availiable so surely need multiple suggestions for that.

I cant build my own as in india its pretty much costly than getting one plus no things are availiable i have checked into that.

then your not going to be able to get a 7200rpm external if you can build one. i would then just go out and buy anything by Western Digital or Seagate as their all the same for the most part.
