Best way to stream from my server

Hi all

 

Was hoping to get some advice. I am running Windows Server 2012 and have all my video/audio media on it. At home I have a shortcut setup to access the server folder so I can play media directly from the server and use Winamp to access the library in a similiar way.

 

What is the best way to do this externally - want to be able to do it in the same way?

have a look at this ,i personally used filezilla ftp server but since server 2012 has the feature included you dont need extra software

if you got good connection streaming wont be a issue with ftp

Don't use FTP. It's not secure.

I'd suggest setting up a VPN and then setup those folder as network share drives, so you can mount them.

Or you can try using sftp if you want it to be secure without using a VPN.

 

But you'd need ssh service running on the windows server and ssh/sftp is not in Windows natively.  To get ssh service (which is what sftp uses) on the server, install CYGWIN.  

 

From the cygwin setup/installer, install the openssh package.

 

Then configure and start up the ssh service daemon on the server.

 

Then you can access it just as you would via filezilla (or whatever tool you prefer like SecureFX, Cuteftp, etc), but instead of using the non-secure ftp protocol you would use SFTP.

 

 

You can login to the server via sftp by interactively entering the userid/pwd.  The downside using interactive password authentication is that it is less secure than using authentication keys, but still more secure than regular ftp.  Personally I always setup ssh/sftp with keygen to use keys with passphrases, but interactive pwd is much simpler.

 

*oh yeah, forgot about port forwarding on your servers router...  ssh will default to listen on port 22.  So you'd have to open that port in your server's firewall... then on your router, forward port 22 to the server.

you are right.  It isn't really more secure.  It is obscurity, which isn't the same thing.  But I'm in a habit of changing from default ports just because I've always done it that way.  Thanks for clarifying though.

 

*now that I think about it though, I wouldn't use ftp or sftp.  I'd probably do as you suggested tunneling with VPN.

 

I just installed CYGWIN in the last few months and it is heavy on my mind. ha.  I've been writing lftp scripts using sftp protocol to mirror folders between machines and my brain is stuck in sftp mode
