I am thinking of getting a new headset and a dedicated sound card. My budget is around $100.

I am looking at the SteelSeries Siberia V2, Plantronics GameCom 780,Corsair Vengeance 1300, or the Razer Kraken PRO. Then I am looking for the Asus XONAR DG for the sound card.

Which one would you pick out of these or would you have something else to suggest? I have a motherboard with realtek alc892 on board audio currently.

Thanks for the help.

Better headphones and an antlion modmic will give you better sound quality from the mic and out of the cans. Headphones like these http://www.headphone.com/headphones/superlux-hd681.php

you're better off with headphones and a mic over just about any headset.

ad700 and HD558's are my typical recommendation.

Will work for electronic components and parts

Would you say that a usb headset is worse than a normal 3.5 jack headset?

Would also like to know this!

Real headphones > gaming headsets

Enjoy those tacos now, for in 1000 years they will be illegal... eh Ha Ha Ha! I think we all know why.

A USB headset will most likely have a it's own soundcard built in somewhere, most likely inline on the cable somewhere. So it would need to be compared with either a similarly priced headset using a 3.5mm jack + an internal or external soundcard, or a headphone + mic of the same price as the USB headset but using the onboard audio of the device you intend to use it with.

Generally these built in soundcards are there in theory to give the user something better (however slight that may be) than onboard audio and sometimes to utilise virtual surround sound and other processing.

Basically one is not better than the other, it depends on the person's situation and budget.

Not likely - absolutely. :P

I'd recommend spending all your budget on the headphones or - eek - headset rather than including a soundcard.

Well, on the bright side, you don't have to worry that your amp isn't optimal, and you wouldn't need to buy a soundcard for it.

On the downside, EVERYTHING is on one gadget and if it breaks you're out the whole kit and caboodle.

Too much bundling in my opinion.  Also the quality of each component tends to be sub-par for the price.

go for one good soundcard or one good headphone.

i came from a Megalodon(trash product), now i'm using the Sony XBA-40's to game and for movies/music. saving for a DT990 and a Fiio E10+Zalman mic lol

can't go wrong lol.
