It depends, wait until the 9000 series comes out and then see the prices of both.

x2 the amount based off what assumption?

the only reason 780 cost so much is because there is no competition from AMD and they can get away with such high prices.

You will see. Trust me... You will see...

No, the only reason this will happen is if AMD is going to take everybody for a fool and try rob them blind.

Hmm, let's see. It will most likely out perform the 780 by 1-5%. Why would they price it lower than the 780 when it is better? It is like pricing a Bugatti cheaper than a Ford.

While i see your point you also have to see that the lack of competition makes for more expensive things. Whenever 9k series is out odds are they will charge their flagship for about 100$ less then NVidia because then you have more people go oh a better card for cheaper and they start flying off the racks. To me what is going to happen is a lot of cards will sell for cheaper because of competition. So If amd charges less then nvidia will have to bring down prices to compete. Amd wont charge more because thats not good business

The only reason 780 is priced so high is because AMD has no competitor for it, Much the same reason the GK110 chip wasn't released as the 680 as was intended.

If AMD isn't pricing 9970 at 7970 launch prices or ever so slightly higher then they are straight up robbing people. Much in the way nvidia is robbing people now with 780/Titan prices, yet nvidia can get away with it at the moment as AMD has no direct competitor at the high end.

Which is quite embarrasing for AMD seeing as what nvidia had intended GK110 as the 6xx series flagship was delayed for an entire generation and released as the 7xx flagship model and STILL beat out AMD. God knows how that even happened.

The price drop will NOT happen at launch. They will price it slightly higher than the 780 or just a little bit lower. After the initial day one sales we might see prices dropping a couple of weeks later.

There is no way in hell that they won't make use of the 780's pricing.

If a company can get away with pricing something higher they will, its just how business is run. I could see it going one of two ways, price in accordance to where it sits in the market or if it is going to be the king of single GPU cards the price it around $20 below the competition so that you starve out the competition as you are offering a superior product for less. Hety could pick either one and it would be a viable business decision, I think it will be 20-50 under the 780 as AMD like to put a thorn in Nvidias foot when it comes to pricing. Look what happened with 600 series, the 7970 was behind the 680 for awhile and AMD dropped prices, when new drivers came out and put them far beyond the 680 AMD did not raise the price again as they were starving Nvidia out of that higher segment of the market.

Guess we will have to wait and see how AMD plays their cards.

Can you please answer my question, is the 7970 worth it right now for $250 :)

Yes it is totally worth it for that price. If you are in need of a graphics card right now. If you can wait, you should wait for the 9950-70 since it is just around the corner.

Yes there is, AMD is not your friend. They want your money.

They are not some sort of charity.

At least they marked down the 7990 to the price point of a 780, and then nvidia still has there 690 at the price of 1000+ amd does price things lower to keep the edge in price to performance.

Honestly, it is as simple as this. Don't buy the products you deem "overpriced". Only if people don't buy enough of them, will they drop the price.

I'm coming from a GTX 460, would it be worth it to just get the 7970 now?

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Only you can answer that.

Are you able to play the games you like at decent settings? Then wait, in my opinion.

Tried dropping settings? Try lowering shadows and AA first.

I know about these settings tweaks, but I've been putting off getting a new GPU for WAY too long now. The last time it was because the 600 series just launched, and somehow I've managed to procrastinate until now. Part of me just wants to get it over with :) As luck would have it, I ordered a 7970 and yesterday they said it was out of stock so I would be getting a refund. I can get another 7970 for $250 or a GTX 770 for it's regular MSRP. What should I do?

Get the 7970. 3 GB VRAM will make it more futureproof.
