Well if hes gonna run skyrim with 20324 different mods at 1440p, 6gb will be good, i only have a few mods and its already maxing 2GB in 1080p so, yeah

With a 1440p monitor. 3GB of RAM is more than enough for gaming today. But theres nothing wrong with having more VRAM if you can get it.

I have a 1440p screen and I'm fine with a GTX770 (2GB)

I was really hoping for more vram usage when I went surround (5890x1080) and got Titans (used to be on 670's and was hitting the vram limit hard)

 

Most games use around 2.6-2.8Gb...I would have been happy with 780's

 

thankfully I haven't beaten skyrim yet so I can enjoy modding the crap out of it - but even then, you can still use slightly lower res textures and have it look just as good while staying within 3Gb

 

oh well, at least I can say I have Titans

I used to play BF3 on a 6850 with only 1GB of vram and that gave me no problems on a single 1080p monitor.

7990 has 3GB from what I understood, 7970 has 3GB. There's also a version of 7970 with 6GB.

 

Other than that he's only option is Titan.

 

Make him grab 780 or 2x 7970 (7990)

I used to play Beyond Good and Evil maxed out with 9600GT, I am sure today's games will run perfectly fine as well on High/Ultra.
