HDD Won't spin/start-up.

Go to solution Solved by WilliamDB,

If it's an old hard drive, get a new one.

If it's a new hard drive, get a new one.

You already solved the issue, it's the hard drive. A new 500GB doesn't cost that much. In fact if you look for a sale I bet you could get a 1TB or even a 2TB drive for the price of a 500GB.

If you want to know what is wrong with that specific drive, hook it up as a secondary drive, and install a different drive as the primary/boot drive. If the drive is showing up under your device manager, the electronics are working, but the platters are not spinning. If it Isn't showing up, that means the electronics are bad.

Either way, if you need information off the drive and it is consistently not spinning up. Try putting it in the freezer over night, then quickly hook it up to your computer and try to salvage your data. You have anywhere from 10-20 minutes of data recovery time once it is plugged in and spinning. (not sure why it works, but it has worked one out of three attempts for me in the past.)

Good Luck!

Hi everyone! I recently build my first rig ever. I bought some neat stuff (IMO) since I'll be using it for my college/work stuff and for gaming. So here are the specs:

  • Motherboard: Asus MAXIMUS VI GENE.
  • Processor: Intel i7-4770k.
  • Graphics Card: GIGABYTE GTX 770.
  • RAM: 2x4GB Kingston HyperX Blu.
  • PSU: Corsair GS700.
  • Case: Cooler Master Enfrocer.
  • HDD: 3.5" Seagate 500GB.

I finished building the PC  without problems, then I installed Win8, all the latest drivers for the Graphics Card & motherboard, then I installed Opera, some games, rebooted lots of times for patches and updates and that's it. The second day when I turned on the PC, after the ROG logo, an error message appeared that said:

The current BIOS setting do not fully support the boot device. Press F1 to enter the BIOS Setup.
Go to Advanced>Boot>CSM Parameters and adjust the CSM (Compatibility Support Module) settings to enable the boot device.

I went to the CSM settings and checked that everything was O.K. I restarted the system and the message appeared aggain. After 2-4 reboots the HDD LED started to flash, then the windows 8 loggo appeared and the O.S. loaded without problems. In that session I downloaded the latest BIOS version and installed it. The system restarted several times and after that the OS loaded. I continued using the PC without problems, then I turned it off.

Today in the morning I turned on my rig and the same CSM error showed up, I rebooted several times till the OS loaded. While I was using Photoshop, the system hung up (but the music I was listening to was still playing). After turning the system off and turning it on again the hard way, the same CSM error appeared.

I completely disconnected the HDD and turned the system on... the same error appeared, so I figured out that error appeared when there wasn't any HDD or Boot disk hooked up. I tested the HDD outside the rig with some adapters and realized it wasn't spinning or making any sound whatsoever like it was not receiving any power. I also tested another HDD and everything worked flawlessly so it's not the PSU, motherboard or the cables I'm using. It's the damn HDD! :B

Why does this happens? Why sometimes it boots up and sometimes it doesn't? It seems like rebooting after the OS loaded doesn't trigger the error but completely turning the system off or making it hibernate does... What could I do?

Thanks in advance!  :D

I'm not an audiophile, I'm just really picky about my music... and my headphones... and my speakers... and my microphone. Other than that, I'm totally not an audiophile.

I was almost expecting this to happen since it was really cheap. I won't try the freezer thing... I had some tunes I was working on but I mean... I lost my data more times than I can remember, I am almost getting used to it.

The dudes who sold me this HDD said it was new and they said it had warranty but claiming the warranty in places like that is almost like seeking for a fight to say the least. Who will knew... ahh. :B  I guess buying a HDD in a well placed store is the only option! Well thank you very much!
