I think about computer hardware too much?

I already have a very nice computer with a 780Ti.

 

But lately I have been dreaming of $4,000 computers every night.

 

Considering I'm primarily a student and only use Adobe Acrobat Reader and YouTube, there's really no point to thinking about expensive hardware every day and night.

 

And yet I constantly watch videos about the latest and greatest hardware, like 4-way Titan X's and phase cooling. I am starry eyed as I watch. I feel butterflies... I am in love with inanimate hardware...? How is this possible? Am I insane...?

You're no different from most of us. most people here who tell you otherwise are lying through their teeth. You think you have a bad case? My vice is fetishistically personifying said hardware into tiny, adorable anime girl versions of it.

So, think yourself lucky that it's just a draw to the allure of the ever-increasing power of hardware. Hardware for me is basically porn.

You could turn that into a hobby. Keep an eye out for people that are buying a new rig and offer to build one for them. If theres a bunch of them you can even charge to do it and turn a profit. I would do this myself but stupid laws in my stupid country make it impossible :(

Nope, not idiot. Having something to use that hardware for its full potential doesnt make me idiot.

Would you encode 4k 60fps RAW videos that are roughly 4 TB each with 4core 8thread 4790k or dual xeon e5 machine with raided ssd's (skylake-e when its released)?

 

Yes its going to be work machine but for once im going to make it best possible for everything, being able to encode those videos while gaming would be perfect.

Yes, but im doing it for something else, those videos aint going to youtube but somewhere else.

If my customers say they want 4k they will damn well get it.

I feel you. There is a difference between gamers and PC enthusiasts. Gamers just wanna game and are competitive and wanna have fun. Enthusiasts like hardware more and building PCs as these two categories do collide but you can tell one from the other. As for me I like gaming to relax but I would rather tinker with my PC all day OCing cable managing painting, upgrading. It just feels better to hold $1000 then spend it on something virtual. I also love to see my work after a long time so I usually build PCs for friends as pre builts are mostly for hard core gamers. As for you my friend this is normal every one has it, just don't go spending your life earnings on it.

I'm a hardware enthusiast too.

 

But there is a point where spending more money just doesn't make sense.

 

A 4790K/6700K PC with two 980Ti's and a Acer XB270HU  is pretty much the max you can go, without trowing your money away just for plain nothing, because there are no 4K 120hz screens yet. With two 980Ti's I could finally play Witcher 3 at 5K DSR with +60FPS.

Not going to be enough for my specific needs in future, and those needs come from my works side, ssd space and performance alone wont cut it on high bitrate 4k 60fps video for starters.

 

I agree 6700K, and two 980 TI's and IPS 1440p monitor is pretty much best most people should go for.

You should have seen the 50k Sheik guy. There was a dude in the Builds section claiming to be a sheik. He asked us to build a 50k. We told him it was useless, but he insisted that he WANTED to waste 50k on it.

 

At the time, I tried a 7 GPU build for Boinc. Couldn't even reach 30k.......

Obviously a troll. If someone is really a millionaire or maybe just earns more then 100.000$/year it's simple. Buy the AVENTUM 3 from Digital Storm maxed out with hardline piping, should cost like 10.000-15.000$

SSD = 500MB/s = 4000MB/s videobitrate. RED cameras shoot at about 800Mb/s which is 100MB/s therefor not even a shitty HDD would bottleneck it.

My external 3TB hdd gets 150Mb/s internal ones go up to like 200Mb/s.

 

I doubt you even work with a 50.000-100.000$ camera... but that's another story :D

 

Meanwhile, the guy behind the 4M views 8K video has like a i7 2600k or something like that from 2011.

My external 3TB hdd gets 150Mb/s internal ones go up to like 200Mb/s.

 

I doubt you even work with a 50.000-100.000$ camera... but that's another story :D

 

Nope i aint saying that 4k is harder than 6k, there are exeptions though like camera you use. I do work with RED Scarlet Dragon, how ever its not mine, i wouldnt blow that much on camera my self, also RED isnt only camera i work with.

In the case of RED Scarlet Dragon 6k is easier to work with than 4k since it records 6k only 12fps and 4k 60fps.

Bullshit dude, Red Epic Dragon can record at 6K 100FPS or 2K 300FPS .

 

 

 

The raw uncompressed RED file is 449MB for exactly 10 seconds (so the total videobitrate is 44.9x8 = 359.2Mb/s), so 1 minute of video is only 2694MB. One hour of uncompressed 6K video is 161GB. It ain't even that bad when you do the math. Adobe Premire Pro CC 2015 can't export more then 300Mb/s anyways.

That is Epic Dragon, not Scarlet Dragon, completly different cameras. http://www.red.com/products/scarlet-dragon#tech-specs
