Hi, I am getting new gear soon, I currently and probably will always run dual GPU. I currently run dual 6770s but it shall be two much higher end cards within the next few months.

To the point, should I get a 4820k and overclock, or a 4770k and overclock? I won't have the money for quite a while, and looking at pricing the 4820k would be cheaper and probably have more advantages.

Thanks,

Sean

4770k, 4820k will be an ivybridge and wont help gaming at all, plus x79 is more expensive so save some money and put it something else. Have fun!

if its gonna be anything like the 3820 vs the 3770 its a waste, the 3770 smoked it at every turn plus once you oc a 3770k its screwed, now being that the 4820 will have a k marked sku and its new architecture thats not out yet i cant say for sure but value wise its a waste of money especially since its gonna be quad core.. 4770k is probably gonna be a much better value

I would like to add another factor. I do high-quality video rendering and editing. I also do video game development, and I use a massive collection of stuff in my PCI-E lanes.

Value wise doesn't matter, if I wanted value I would have chosen a 3570k and a single GTX 770, but the 3820 didn't have me convinced because of the lack of unlocked multipliers.

Ivy Bridge vs Haswell is kind of shady for me, the cheaper one is my preference, motherboard cost out of the way the CPU is waaaaay better value.

every test and bench ive seen the 3770k smoked the 3820 every time even in your usage scenarios, its really just a wasted sku in alot of peoples opinions, now if the 4820k is a significant improvement over the 3820 to the point that the 4770k isnt smoking it every time then maybe its a viable option but as of now either a 3770k or a 4770k is the best option unless you wanna go for a 3930k or 4930k when they launch

4820 is ivy bridge i7 with more pcie lanes and stuff so as long as you are not getting 6 core processor or xeons with that lga 2011 socket, ask yourself: are you gonna use more than 2 pciexpress slots? If not go with Haswell probably will be cheaper. If yes you need x79.

But I really don't see why not go for 6 core which will have a huge edge on the haswell if you plan to get x79 board anyway.

So... If Jesus had the gold, would he buy himself out instead of waiting 3 days for the respawn?

Do you use a lot of ram in editing? If so the quad channel ram on the x79 platform may be better for you.

just for your information guys; chances are the 4820k vs 4770k is going to be more like the 2700k vs 3820(arguably k) about a 10% peformance difference.

Console optimisations and how they will effect you | The difference between AMD cores and Intel cores | Memory Bus size and how it effects your VRAM usage |
How much vram do you actually need? | APUs and the future of processing | Projects: SO - here

Intel i7 5820l @ with Corsair H110 | 32GB DDR4 RAM @ 1600Mhz | XFX Radeon R9 290 @ 1.2Ghz | Corsair 600Q | Corsair TX650 | Probably too much corsair but meh should have had a Corsair SSD and RAM | 1.3TB HDD Space | Sennheiser HD598 | Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro | Blue Snowball

thats what im trying to point out, the 3770k has outperformed the 3820 in every bench ive seen for them and thats with the 3770k at stock, once its oc'd it puts the 3820 to shame and i really dont see it being any different with the 4820 or the 4820k

Edit: i should also add something, the most logical choice in my opinion would be to find a 3930k used from a good reputable seller, my friend just got one for $375 off ebay and there are no issues with it, that way he gets a good powerhouse cpu without breaking the bank if he really wants x79

......... Did you read I said?

The difference will be 2700k vs 3820k, a 10% difference.

Reason being is that the 3770k was brought out after the 3820 and that after the 2700k. Intel know what they're doing and would not create a redundant chip.

The 3820 was worth the money when the 2700k was top of the mainstream platform for those that were desperate to get on the x79 it was still better than the best mainstream and came with all the x79 perks and features. Now it isn't as 2 new mainstream architectures have come out (ivybridge and haswell respectively) it will be the same for the 4820k it will be beaten by the 5770k and owned by the 6770k just like the 3820 is by the 2700k and 3770k respectively.

i know at the time it was but at that time it still wasnt worth it to me, in my mind unless your getting at least a 3930k its not really worth it, now obviously the 4820k is gonna be an improvement plus its not out so i dont wanna pass judgement on it yet however come that time ill have a 3930k so yeah..

I think for people going for multi-gpu setups due to the mass amount of pci-e lanes it was worth it.

yeah which is exactly why ill be getting my dads 3930k off him very soon and buying an evga x79 dark to match it ;) then loading it up with more mem to match what im using now.. by then ill have my second lightning 770 :) normally i wouldnt bother with x79 though

yeah, im not hating on the platform at all or anything i love it however until the new cpu's launch i cant really pass judgement, as of right now 4770k is the best unless your going for a 3930k

either way im excited for benchmarks when they finally release, im quite curious and may just end up buying a 4930k

4930k is going to be a beast but hasell-e is probably going to own it; hard.
