Do 3D TV's have bad viewing angles?

Go to solution Solved by Jamdude,

Not all of them do, I have a Sony KDL-55HX923 and the viewing angles from the side are great, there's next to no colour distortion.  But when looking down at the TV or up at it, the colours distort quite a lot.

Are you looking at a certain model? There are 3DTV's out there that aren't TN. There's plasma, DLP, OLED, etc.

Just a disagreement between my cousin and I, I said that it will have horrible viewing angles, and he disagreed,  but if it uses plasma then the pixels won't be fast enough and you wont the optimal experience. So what's the point of using anything but a TN panel in this scenario

So I guess the answer is....Depends?

My 3D plasma has a refresh rate of 600hz, and a <1ms response time...

Plasmas are known for their viewing angles too.

Yes, 3D TVs can use different panel types and they all behave differently from each other.

Your TV won't actually be 600Hz, it'll just be a motion enhancer.  My KDL-55HX923 says it's 800Hz because of Sony's Motionflow XR which is just perceived refresh rate but the actual panel is 200Hz.

Plasma TVs aren't LCDs... they don't have refresh rates, really xD  The "600Hz" on plasma TVs is not equivalent to what a 600Hz LCD would be.

3D TVs don't do 3D through 120Hz.  They still use IPS panels at 60Hz, and something called Passive 3D, which splits the pixel lines.  So rather than switching the entire image between left and right every frame, doubling the necessary refresh rate, Passive 3D displays both at the same time.  The odd numbered lines display left eye content, and the even numbered lines display right eye content, and vice versa each refresh.  So still at 60Hz.

There are no real 120Hz TVs.  The advertised "120Hz" or "240Hz" TVs use image processing to emulate fake frames.  But they do not use panels that are actually capable of 120Hz or above.  They all operate at 60Hz.

We have two 3dtvs', one passive (LG-55") and one active (Samsung-42") plus my 3d monitor for the PC and the passive LG has the best viewing angle.  For the kids the passive LG screen is far better for viewing.  You don't lose the effect when tilt your head and far better at keeping the 3d effect when viewing the screen from the sides.  Also the glasses are lighter, cheap and less dark.  The active shutter Samsung tv is almost impossible to view good 3d or lose the 3d effect when viewing from angles.  Viewing down or up on the screen seems to have less negative effects as side viewing.  Our active screen sits high on the wall and I do not lose the effect when looking upwards to see the screen.  Both tvs have different refresh rates but with movies I cant tell the difference if one is smoother than the other.  When 3d gaming on the 3dtvs plugged into the pc refresh rates don't really come into play as im locked to 3DTV Play software which locks me to 24fps at 1080p or 60 fps at 720P .... neither are great gaming.

Active shutters are by far a better image, better color and less noise.  Both tvs have great clarity when viewing from the sides/up,down when in 2d mode.
