Are these temps too high?

EmKa7a

I have XFX R9 290 DD on default clocks and I think I am getting a bit high temperature on VRM1. What do you think? The game I've tested is GTA 5 for 10-15 minutes in online mode.

It's still within safe range of 125C max but I would add a fan to cool the back or VRM area it seems like it's a common problem:

Hm okay and after some 2-3 hours of gaming im getting some black screens in browser/game, but I am not sure if that is caused by the temperatures

You can give XFX a call. If your card is not rev 3.1 or rev 4 they will give you the okay to send it back and receive one with better cooled VRMs.

use msi afterburner to make a more aggressive fan curve. it will sound like a vacuum cleaner but it will draw lots. more air in which should cool the vrms

yeah i use the sapphire r9 290 TRI-X and i have an aggressive fan curve.  It ramps from 30%-50% at 55C then at 65C i have it ramp to 90% then at 70 i do 100% and it wont go past 71 on anything.  It can get loud if your room is silent but usually i cant hear it over my case fans.  Its truly not a bother and when i have explosions going off in my ears and gunfire i cant hear the little fans cooling away in the case

I don't have the same graphics card, and I'm not experienced in this area, but the temperatures does seem a bit high.

Anyone with the same card can come in and have a look?

The 290 and 290X can run safely even at 90*C on the core but the VRMs should definitely be cooler.

Btw, since he has the same case as me, remember the sound-dampening foam also keeps heat in there and the airflow isn't the best but still. VRMs should be a max of 10*C more than the core if I were to judge based on other people's 290s by XFX. My VRMs are about 4*C higher at max load. (69 core and 72 vrm)

No matter what the Temps in Theory could be. If you can bake a Schnitzel on your Graphics Card, you should do something about it. The Liferspan will go down the Hill with this Temps all the Time.

Your Temps are fine, his not.

Yours is a bit high actually. Tera Scale (5000 and 6000 series) should stay bellow 85 whereas Hawaii (290(x)/390(x)) can easily manage 90 according to AMD.

My old 6850 maxed out at 64*C

Yeah, VRMs are high. I assume it's the rev 1 or rev 3.0 cooler fro mXFX - hence the weird temps. Another guy with an XFX rev 3.1/4 had 76 core and 82 vrm1

I assume mine are like so cuase of the inverted airflow (front exhuast)

It's a blower so it's not exactly high :P

Was too much of a scrub to pick a decent card at the time + It's 4/5 years old so it's bound to get fousty.

BLOWER? WHERE? GIFF ME PICS!!!! :D

(as you can see I love blower coolers)

In that case I guess it's perfectly fine for a 6970. I'm still a bit scared of having damaged my VRMs via furmark cause of the 4*C increas in their temps but people have been telling me it's most likely due to the reversing in Airflow (back to front - weird, I know - CPU cooler wouldn't fit RAM so this was the next best thing)

Yeah that could be a factor reverse air flow, mines is all over the place right now I need to aquire a fan for the side panel. :( My older one stopped working (Coolermaster stock 230mm fan even though it's impossible to find 230mm's...)

I am almost certain it's the reverse airflow but I don't really feel like reversing just to get 3 degrees of the VRMs and let the hot air pile up inside. Not sure if 72*C on the VRM1 is too much worse than 67-68*C but idk.

Next time I'm surely buying a blower btw, I really like how they look and that the case stays cool.

You could also try a 140mm/240mm fan - should be able to fit one, I think :D

So I found that my R9 290 is v4.0. I I was thinking that I have v3.0 or lower and that causes the problem. But its 4.0.

What kind of airflow you got? are the front intakes doing their job? Also a 290x can stand up to 95ºC i believe, but it shouldn't get that hot with an aftermarket cooler. Also the VRMs...maybe it can go that high but 112 seems terrifying to me, can you send a pic or a description of your rig with enphasis on airflow?

Bitfenix has 230mm on newegg for about 20USD, not sure if they got them where you're at, though.
