I use the keypad a lot, and never use the top row of numbers.

I kinda wish the keyboard only had symbols on the top row so i wouldn't need to press shift to activate those.

When I'm doing CAD/CAM work I use it all of the time on my workstation.

But I'm also used to not having it, like on my laptop.

Someone needs to revamp the modern keyboard as we know it. Or, you could just reconfigure the keys.

I think they should get rid of the number row on top and replace it with the symbols so you don't have to press shift for the !  $ @ # ( ) all the time!

Way more than I should probably but I use it out of many years of habbit so going to the num row for number intensive tasks would be quite hard. I like having my numpad to the point where I switched to the TKL form factor instead of the ultra compact HHKB style just because I could program the hom cluster and arrow to work like a numpad.

I have tried this because i thought it would be better especially for coding but not having the num row was problematic when typing since I use the it when im typing 1 or 2 numbers as its far quicker.

true with the colon and the question mark but I use the apostrophe much more than quote marks.

Most sentences have words like:

I'll, don't,  can't, won't, he's, they're and you're

but not many sentences have quotes.

This also.

Haha after posting my earlier comment, I tried KeyTweak and SharKeys but they dont allow you to remapp 1 -> ! :(

Anyone else know a solution?

If we could do this, it would surely save my pinky from all those extra presses!

really? what happens when you have to type a lot like when writing a paper, coding, working, or writing wall-o-text posts on the forum (like me)?
