[Budget Build] Pentium G3258, AMD x4 860K, or FX 4350?

Embattled
Go to solution Solved by iHardware Shelden,

This is the same bundle I went with and I could not be happier, kicked my old i3 rigs ass in terms on gaming, then when you want move to Intel down the road when you can afford a good board and an i5 :)

Hi guys, so I am putting together a budget build for my friend (~$400 USD) and wanted to know which cpu/platform to go with as I don't have a ton of experience at the low end. He plays mostly source games and league but one of the points of this build is to allow him to play newer and more demanding titles.Taking a bit of inspiration from this tek syndicate video (not really a fan of them btw) I planned out 3 builds with the only difference being the CPU and mobo. I don't really know how good each CPU is going to perform while gaming so that's why I'm here to get some advice on the best one.

Pentium G3258 Build: Extremely popular budget gaming CPU, my only gripe with it and the thing that spurred me to look at the two other CPU's is that it's a dual core and will struggle with games that need more than two (cough FC4 cough)

x4 860K Build: Newer architecture and a quad core, much newer than the fx chip (2014 vs 2011). The problem with this one is that the FM2 socket is a poor overclocker in general and has less upgrade options than AM3+

FX 4350 Build: Quad core and a more upgradable and OCable platform. My only real gripe with this one is that the architecture is old and I don't think it's single thread IPC can compete with the G3258 tho admittedly I don't know a ton about these chips.

So LTT community, what do you think would be the best choice for my friend?please try to suppress the intel bias a bit two and at least check out the other two k thx

The Pentium route has a better upgrade path.

Even though it is limited by its dual core nature, he will be better off in the future.

AMD is generally cheaper though,So if you can't afford intel's higher price tag then screw intel.

Go with Fastest IPC+Updatability being a HUGE DEAL

Deal with dual cores for the SMALL smount of time and then grab an i3/i5 afterwards and actually get REAL RAW performance back.

You can't upgrade the other two options to have any REAL gains at all when your fed up with lacklustre performance.

Intel VS AMD aside....for Gaming,... when you only have one REAL performance part in this OPs comparison list/budget that's feasible, fanboyism isn't a part of that, its fact, don't waste your money by having to save twice for another system when the AMD CPU's don't hold up,..when you can create the system now with a slightly weaker CPU, and have an upgrade path that STOMPS the rest into the ground.

You wont be using this specific setup forever, get what has an upgrade path, or..... be prepared to fork out for another whole platform in a short time when your CPU can't keep up in Games with your future GPU's NOT giving any extra performance after the upgrade with an AMD based system.

Without knowing your usage, an argument to be made,..maybe AMD is better for you...unless your setting up a encoding/render farm with FX/x4,..why limit yourself by choosing a weaker platform.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

I don't like any of those CPU's you have mentioned.

Let's say games are multi threaded, sure 860K is better.

In single threaded....... :/

The Intel build have always been stronger

and based on the games your buddy plays

the Intel build will be a great investment and grab the i3 over the Pentium

the AMD 370 is actually a R7 265 or HD7850 GPU

look for R9 270X or R9 280

Same CPU architecture, the one with more mhz is faster.

Should I hold off a bit then with rumors about a recent(ish) realease of a 950?

950 is a 750Ti rebrand

nah not a good idea

go for at least R9 270 or R9 270X in the used market
